Drone Pilot - Applied Drone Education
POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking three currently employed professionals from diverse industries to teach students about the burgeoning drone ecosystem. This flexible, part-time position is specifically designed to accommodate your existing full-time role, offering a unique opportunity to mentor the next generation and impart your real-world experience.
The Drone Pilot for Applied Drone Education supports Le Moyne College’s Keenan Center for Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Creativity in delivering high-quality, experiential instruction within the College’s drone education programs. This position combines didactic (classroom-based) and applied (field-based) education in drone operations, emphasizing real-world flight missions, safety compliance, and workforce readiness. The Drone Pilot will assist in developing and implementing hands-on flight experiences that connect theory to practice across various professional and industrial applications.
This position is funded by external sources and is contingent on the continued receival of those funds.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Job duties specific to this position:
- Conduct safe, compliant drone flight operations in instructional and applied learning settings.
- Deliver instruction on flight planning, data collection, mission execution, and post-flight analysis.
- Support classroom learning with demonstrations and hands-on activities that enhance student understanding.
- Collaborate with course instructors and program managers to coordinate applied flight sessions.
- Oversee student participation in mission-based exercises, ensuring FAA compliance and best practices.
- Maintain and manage drone equipment, batteries, and field gear.
- Log flight activities and assist students in maintaining accurate flight records.
- Assist students with editing photos and videos obtained from missions into finished products suitable for presentation or professional use.
- Stay current with FAA regulations, industry standards, and emerging technologies in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
- Serve as a mentor to students, promoting professional conduct and responsible drone operations.
Pay Range: $50 per hour
QUALIFICATIONS
- FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate.
- Demonstrated experience operating small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) in commercial, industrial, or applied contexts.
- Strong knowledge of drone safety, flight planning, and data workflows.
- Ability to work collaboratively and instruct students in dynamic learning environments.
- Ability to instruct drone flight to students 2 times per month
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with educational instruction, flight training, or mentorship roles.
- Familiarity with AirSpace Link, DroneDeploy, Pix4D, or related mission planning and data analysis software.
- Proficiency in photo and video editing software such as Adobe Lightroom, DaVinci Resolve, or comparable tools.
- Technical understanding of drone maintenance and troubleshooting
