EARLY MODERN IBERIAN ATLANTIC FACULTY FELLOW (Start Sept. 2026)

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese invites applications for the position of Faculty Fellow in Early Modern Iberian Atlantic and/or Trans-Oceanic Studies, starting on 9/1/2026. The position will initially be offered for a period of one year, renewable for up to a maximum of three years in rank, pending budgetary and administrative approval. We are interested in literary, visual, anthropological, and cultural approaches to colonialism, enslavement, racializations, empire, gender/sexuality, and/or material culture. Expertise in languages in addition to Spanish and/or Portuguese is welcomed. The teaching commitment will be 2 courses in one semester, and 1 course in the other semester.

Individuals who are in the process of completing their PhDs must graduate by the start date of the position. For full consideration, candidates should submit their application materials before March 15, 2026. The search will remain open until the position is filled.

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is composed of a diverse group of scholars who have worked together to create a rigorous and inclusive environment for research and teaching. Faculty work in literature, history, philosophy, law, art history, and a range of interrelated areas including archival studies, animal studies, sexuality studies, performance studies, memory studies, and environmental aesthetics, while also encouraging new approaches to questions of visual media, print culture, and sound. We encourage applicants to look at the faculty bios on our website to see the breadth of our interests and to imagine how they might fit into -and expand- the intellectual profile of our community.

The successful candidate will teach in our undergraduate and graduate curriculum, and also have the opportunity to collaborate with many units and projects adjacent to the department, including NYU’s Study-Abroad program at NYU Madrid, the Espacio de Culturas, the Center of Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CLACS), the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora, the Hemispheric Institute, and the Center for the Humanities, among others.

Application Materials: 1) cover letter; 2) CV (with active phone number/email); 3) names and contact information for 3 references; 4) one writing sample related to their major area of research; and 5) an undergraduate sample syllabus of a course of their own design.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary for this position is $60,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
