Job Description

Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nations Capital and nestled in a history-rich region of Southern Maryland, the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has twice been recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the top 150 community colleges in the nation. The faculty member is responsible for the development, planning, preparation, presentation, and evaluation of classroom instruction and related activities to promote student-centered learning. The faculty member is responsible for performing assigned duties during the day, evening, or weekend on the campus(es) or center to which the faculty member is assigned. Flexibility is required as faculty may be expected to teach classes at varying campus locations, depending on department needs. At a minimum, the related activities include instruction, holding office hours, serving on various committees, and participating in local, state, regional, and national professional activities and organizations. A faculty member performs all other duties as directed by the Department Chair, Dean, and Vice President for Division of Learning, or the President or designee.

The faculty member will teach 30 credits annually, and will schedule, publish, and hold a minimum of five office hours per week, per semester. The faculty member will participate in professional development opportunities and perform professional service hours based on faculty placement in rank, as set forth in the Faculty Handbook.  

Primary areas of teaching responsibility include: Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering

The faculty member is responsible to the Department Chair in the department in which they teach and to the Dean of the School of STEM and Professional Studies, and the Vice President of the Division of Learning.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities

At a minimum, the must be able to perform the following essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations:

Teaching and Course Coordination:

  • Develop, plan, organize, and instruct courses at various times, including day, evening and weekends.
  • Maintain current, discipline-relevant expertise in the subjects taught and inspire enthusiasm among students.
  • Ensure that each class includes essential curricular components, relevant content, and effective pedagogy.
  • Recommend textbooks, instructional materials, and equipment to the Program Coordinator or Department Chair.
  • Teach all classes according to approved course syllabi.
  • Keep students informed about course content, requirements, evaluation procedures, and attendance expectations.
  • Provide prompt grading and maintain accurate scholastic records, including attendance.
  • Submit academic reports and documentation as required.
  • Conduct class evaluations and participate in college evaluations.
  • Ensure classes are held as scheduled in the modality advertised.
  • Make curriculum improvement recommendations.
  • Participate in program and curriculum reviews and student learning outcomes assessment.
  • Utilize college online resources for communication and course management.
  • Plan each lesson with consideration for content and teaching methods.
  • Adapt teaching to accommodate various learning styles and incorporate instructional technologies when appropriate.
  • Maximize learning opportunities for each student.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current in pedagogical trends and approaches.
  • Offer personal conferences and maintain faculty office hours.
  • Strive for qualities outlined in faculty evaluation criteria.
  • Submit required reports in a timely manner.
  • Attend various college meetings and activities.
  • Serve on college committees as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education and Training

Degree(s) required:Bachelors degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering and a masters degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or closely related field

Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required

Experience required:Industry experience with strong partnerships
Experience preferred:Two years of teaching, preferably at the community college level
