ELL instructor
Johnson County Community College is searching for non-credit instructors to teach English to non-native speakers by emphasizing reading, vocabulary development, listening, speaking, writing and grammar in a student-centered classroom environment at JCAE locations. These positions are not located on the main JCCC campus; they are at West Park and Center of Grace locations.
Duties include:
- Create and submit weekly lesson plans using the provided digital template to the building lead.
- Learn and implement the required curriculum that emphasizes life skills, workplace skills, digital literacy, civics/citizenship, and more.
- Access and utilize the JCAE ELL website and other online resources for teaching.
- Maintain student data, attendance records, and other resources.
- Conference with learners at the beginning and end of the semester to discuss goals and growth.
- Participate in new student intake onboarding such as registration, orientation, and testing.
- Participate in staff development activities both online and in-person each semester.
- Complete all JCCC annual mandatory training and administrative requirements, including onboarding for JCAE new teachers.
- Access email regularly and read Weekly Updates.
- Work with the building lead to schedule a formal observation, followed by a debrief and follow-up.
- Fill-in periodically for other teachers.
Daytime and evening shifts are available, up to 20 hours per week.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Education, English as a Second Language, or related area.
- Experience working with English language learners in a classroom setting.
- Able to create quality digital lesson plans and maintain a student-centered classroom.
- Demonstrate classroom management skills and interactive teaching methods.
- Understand, support, and differentiate for multi-level learners.
- Show proficiency in basic classroom technology, Microsoft applications, and other program technologies.
- Flexibility.
- Minimum of one year teaching in a classroom setting (not individual tutoring).
- Experience working with a culturally diverse population.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications and basic classroom technology.
- Experience teaching adult learners.
Preferred Qualifications:
- TESOL certificate from an accredited university or a master's degree in teaching English as a Learning Language.
- Ability to work with a diverse adult student population.
- Ability to teach in a student-centered classroom for 3-hour sessions with interactive learning.
- Experience teaching adult English Language Learners.
