Lecturer (Director of English education)
The Department of English at Stony Brook University invites applications for a full-time lecturer to direct the English Teacher Preparation program, beginning September 2026. The English Teacher Education Program Director will be responsible for the following:
Admissions/Recruitment
- Recruit students at university and department events (Accepted Students Day, Major Fairs, etc.).
- Conduct information sessions for students in the English Department about programs (twice per semester).
- Review and evaluate applications for both the undergraduate and MAT programs on a rolling basis.
Faculty Responsibilities
- Teach (2/3 load) in both the English Education program as well as in the English Department.
- Attend faculty meetings for DTALE as well as the English Department.
Program/Program Faculty Management
- Conduct research, collect and analyze program data for accreditation as well as to measure program growth and inform new initiatives.
- Conduct program faculty meetings and manage teaching assignments.
- Enroll students in permission-only courses through a vetting process.
- Update program requirements and perform standards maintenance as directed by changes in standards, certification requirements, etc.
- Prepare accreditation reports for the BA, BA-MA, and MAT programs.
- Collaborate with Department Chair and Program Coordinator to develop and maintain relationships with schools and teachers, including the expansion of the English Accelerated College Education (ACE) program.
- Coordinate management of MOUs with partner schools.
- Attend and participate in regional and state meetings as well as yearly SUNY workshops related to student teaching and field experiences.
Student Management
- Work with the Director of Field Experience to conduct outreach and facilitate partnerships with local secondary schools and teachers.
- Conduct Student Teaching Orientation Seminars twice a year.
- Maintain ongoing relationships to facilitate partnerships with and consideration for our students.
- Create formative and summative student teaching assessments.
- Inform about changing NYS Certification Requirements and EdTPA.
Required Qualifications:
M.A. (foreign equivalent or higher) in English or in Teaching of English. Teacher Certification in English. Experience Teaching English Language Arts, Grades 6-12. Experience with ELA curriculum development.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in English or EdD in Teaching of English. Experience with professional organizations such as the National Writing Project, National Council of Teachers of English, New York State English Council or Long Island Language Arts Council. The applicant should have strong leadership and organizational skills as well as knowledge of educational technology. Applicants should be cognizant of current educational initiatives, such as SEL, Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Framework, Adolescent Literacy Development, Equity and Access in teacher training. Applicants should also have knowledge of current educational policies and of NYS teacher/leader education program regulation. They should also have experience with developing meaningful student-informed instruction and formative and summative assessment.
