Job Summary:

The Department of Art History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks a creative, dynamic scholar to serve as the Howard and Ellen Louise Schwartz Visiting Assistant Professor in the History of Contemporary Architecture. This is a two-year position (2026-2028), with the potential to renew for a third year (2028-2029) pending successful review. Thematic focus, methodological approach, and geographic area of specialization are open, but the department has a particular interest in architectural historians with a trans-national, cross-cultural, and global focus. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated expertise in teaching and research in Contemporary Architectural History. The position comes with a reduced teaching load of 2-1 per year.

Key Job Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be required to teach courses at all levels – including innovative, large-enrollment introductory courses and intermediate/advanced courses in their area of specialization. They will be an affiliate of the Institute for Research in the Humanities and will be encouraged to participate in the programming of the Center for Visual Cultures, the Material Culture program, and/or other relevant research centers on campus. They will be expected to engage in significant ongoing research and publication during their time at UW-Madison.

Compensation:
The expected salary range for this position is $70,000 up to $76,000 for highly experienced candidates. Actual pay within this range will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Research specialization in the History of Contemporary Architecture within a global framework
  • Evidence of outstanding teaching potential with a commitment to teaching upper and lower-level courses, working with both undergraduate and graduate students
  • Evidence of innovation and productivity in research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in or potential to foster a teaching, learning, research, and departmental environment where all can thrive.
  • Research and teaching that complements the expertise and course offerings of current department faculty.

Education:
Required PhD in Art/Architectural History (or related field) by start of appointment.
Applicants who have not yet been awarded the degree but will have the degree in hand by August 21, 2026, must submit a letter from their department chair confirming that the degree is expected by the start of the Visiting Assistant Professorship.
