Job Duties:

The Embedded Counselor for the ECU Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) will offer services to medical and graduate students at the BSOM and will work as part of a multidisciplinary staff. This position reports to the ECU Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) Director. This embedded position is housed in the Brody School of Medicine (BSOM) and provides direct mental health counseling and support services to BSOM medical students and graduate students. Additionally, the embedded counselor works directly with BSOM faculty and staff providing consultation and education regarding counseling services, crisis intervention, and referrals. The counselor will also be a part of the CCSD team which allows for consultative support, expanded specialized service offerings, and back-up service provision as needed. This position may be eligible for Flexible Work Arrangements (FWA) under the ECU FWA Policy. Up to one day per week (on a rotating schedule) may be remote after being fully on-boarded.

Clinical Duties

  • Provide ethical, evidence-based clinical mental health counseling to medical students and graduate students enrolled at ECU Brody School of Medicine.
  • Make a thorough evaluation of students mental status, behavioral functioning, social and cultural circumstances, family support dynamics and resources and construct treatment plans.
  • Perform emergency and crisis intervention when necessary. Appropriately refer students for voluntary or involuntary hospitalization or other emergency treatment when applicable.
  • Provide case management services to support the coordination of care and follow-up services for students including making/receiving referrals from CCSD.
  • Connect students with appropriate medication management providers or other providers on campus or in the community as needed.
  • Maintain timely records of services provided and use appropriate clinical record keeping protocols.
  • Maintain active clinical licensure and remain current in relevant areas of mental health counseling expertise.
  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries in clinical role.
  • Direct clinical service expectations include scheduling an average of 24 hours of clinical appointments per week. Clinical services are the priority of this position and can exceed this expectation during peak periods andwhen a crisis service request arises.
  • Some portion of this time (at least once per week) will be designated in the evening (between 5:00-7:00 PM) to facilitate interaction with medical students.
  • Clinical service will be accomplished by being embedded in office space in the Brody School of Medicine or in an ECU Health setting to facilitate availability for medical students on clinical rotations.

Outreach duties

  • Develop and present workshops for students on various mental health topics including, but not limited to, psychological and emotional well-being, stress management, relationship concerns, academic adjustment, family issues, performance and test anxiety, and other relevant topics.
  • Support the objectives of the Brody School of Medicine Office of the Student Success and Wellness and Academic Affairs related to enhancing student wellness. This may include providing presentations or consultations to faculty, staff and units on student mental health and counseling services as well as participation on various committees.
  • Collaborate with the ECU Student Affairs Student Well-Being & Dean of Students Units Campus Recreation and Wellness Team to coordinate provision of 'Live Well @ Brody' programs.

Meetings/Other duties

  • Collaborate with team members to collect data, evaluate personal counseling services, and make recommendations for program improvements.
  • Provide services during extended hours at least once each week.
  • Attend BSOM departmental and division meetings or events as needed.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings at the Center for Counseling and Student Development (in person), case conference meetings (virtual) twice/month, Student Affairs divisional programs, and other events as needed.
  • Participate as an active member of the Brody School of Medicine Student Services Subcommittee in preparation for Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) for accreditation site visits including:
    • Provide updates and reports in consultation with the CCSD Director required by the Continuous Quality Improvement Committee (CQIC) regarding student mental health counseling and wellness;
    • Preparing written reports describing data and processes related to student mental health counseling and wellness for inclusion in the LCME Data Collection Instrument;
    • Providing any related follow-up reports required by the LCME;
    • Being prepared to actively participate in portion of LCME Survey Visits related to student mental health counseling and wellness.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Masters degree in Counseling, Social Work, or a related mental health field.
  • Licensed for clinical practice as a mental health clinician in the state of North Carolina
  • Demonstrated ability to counsel a student population to provide effective counseling and treatment.
  • Experience with time-oriented, brief models of therapy.
  • Demonstrated crisis management skills, including experience with risk assessment and safety planning for thoughts of harming oneself or others
  • Knowledge and experience with prevention models of care that promote mental health and wellness.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation:

Licensed for clinical practice as a mental health clinician in the state of North Carolina.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education:

  • At least 4 years of professional experience providing mental health and wellness counseling to college learners and/or adult learners in professional schools.
  • Knowledge of DSM-5-TR.
  • Experience assisting professional students with performance-related mental health concerns.
  • Experience and commitment to working with underserved students.
  • Commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice and to professional integrity.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Licensed for independent practice as a mental health clinician in the state of North Carolina
