The Opportunity | Te Whiwhinga mahi

We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Engagement Manager – Global to lead AUT’s strategic global and community engagement with international stakeholders, ethnic communities, embassies, and diplomatic partners.

Reporting to the Strategic Partnerships & Alumni Manager, this role sits within the Office of the Vice‑Chancellor – Strategic Partnerships and plays a key role in enhancing AUT’s global reputation, strengthening international relationships, and delivering high‑quality engagement outcomes aligned with the University’s strategic objectives and Te Aronui framework.

You will manage and deliver bespoke international engagement activities, coordinate and host incoming international delegations, and provide trusted strategic advice to senior leaders on emerging international matters, risks, and opportunities. The role requires strong intercultural competence, sound judgement, and the ability to operate confidently in dynamic and sometimes sensitive environments.

Evening and weekend work is required at times to represent AUT at official functions, cultural events, and diplomatic engagements.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in international relations, communications, strategic partnerships, public relations, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in stakeholder engagement and relationship management across diverse cultural contexts.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating events, including cultural, diplomatic, or international engagements.
  • Strong understanding of international relations, protocol, and community engagement principles.
  • Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and a genuine commitment to applying its principles in practice.
  • High levels of cultural intelligence, discretion, and emotional intelligence.
  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Confidence in representing an organisation at high‑profile events and forums.
  • A commitment to equity, diversity and Supportive of AUT’s Te Aronui journey (link).

You will bring an open, engaging, and collaborative approach, with the flexibility to respond to changing requirements, and actively contribute to a positive and collegial environment. You will demonstrate cultural humility, awareness, and respect when engaging with indigenous peoples and culturally diverse communities. Experience supporting indigenous, equity, or inclusion focused initiatives is highly desirable.

  • Salary Ranges | Ngā Utu: $110,000 - $131,000 per annum (dependent on experience and qualifications)
