This position supports the ABET -accredited Environmental Engineering and
Manufacturing Engineering programs in DoET, as well as the proposed three-year accelerated bachelor’s degree program in Applied Technologies. The Engineering Lab Technician supports teaching, research, and laboratory operations by maintaining laboratory workspaces, analytical instruments, and engineering equipment. The position is responsible for the upkeep of DoET laboratory facilities, compliance with safety standards, and coordinating with and assisting faculty and students with the proper use of equipment and procedures. The incumbent will demonstrate procedures, monitor safe use, and help ensure reliable and efficient laboratory operations. Duties and Responsibilities: • Assist with the preparation of ABET - EAC and ATMAE self-studies and related accreditation materials. • Support faculty and students with laboratory equipment and procedures in Mc Lin and Jenkins Hall laboratories with the coordination and guidance of the faculty. • Assist faculty with the acquisition, setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment. • Maintain inventory of supplies and services, organize laboratory workspaces, and assist with budget planning and supply projections. • Order equipment and supplies, prepare materials for demonstrations and class assignments, and maintain clean laboratory, storage, and preparation areas. • Serve as the DoET laboratory safety officer by promoting compliance with safety procedures and proper handling and disposal of materials used in instruction and research. • Provide laboratory housekeeping, maintenance, and security support. • Maintain operating and maintenance manuals and related files for major equipment. • Monitor the use of equipment, tools, and shop supplies. • Provide instruction to students and faculty on the safe and proper operation of departmental equipment. • Supervise work-study students and/or student research assistants, as assigned. • Lead the development, implementation, and enforcement of laboratory policies and procedures. • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the department chairperson. • Ensure completion of annual or biennial laboratory safety certification through the university or a recognized external body. Minimum Qualifications • An associate degree in engineering technology or a related field is preferred but not required. • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse populations. • Authorization to work in the United States. • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 30 pounds. • A valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. Preferred Qualifications • A bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, general engineering, or a related field is preferred but not required. • Two to three years of experience working in an engineering laboratory. • Relevant licenses or certifications in engineering technology or engineering are preferred. • Experience with water quality, air quality, energy, and GIS laboratory equipment. • Experience with fundamental manufacturing and assembly processes. • Experience with Solid Edge, Unigraphics NX, and Mastercam, or the ability to learn these software packages quickly. • Experience with hands-on CAD / CAM / CNC programming and operation of the Feeler VMP -580 Machining Center, Pro Trak 1630 Turning Center, and EDM machine, or the ability to acquire these skills quickly. • Proficiency in the use of personal computers and related software applications. • Strong technical knowledge of laboratory procedures and associated equipment. • Excellent customer service and organizational skills. • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing. • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, faculty, and students. • Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills for training students and faculty in equipment use and laboratory operations.
