Sequoias Community College District is seeking a qualified and equity-minded candidate to fill a full-time, tenure-track position in the English Department beginning August 2026. This position is located on the COS Tulare Campus.

Assignments may include evening classes and teaching at any of the Sequoias Community College District Campuses: Visalia, Hanford and/or Tulare. Participation in the governance of the Sequoias Community College District by way of committee assignments is encouraged.

The Tulare Campus offers a distinctive academic community that brings together transfer disciplines and applied disciplines in agriculture, technology and trades. General education faculty play a vital role in shaping students' communication, critical thinking and academic confidence. The District is especially interested in a candidate committed to developing an enduring English presence on the Tulare Campus, in collaboration with colleagues across the campus and District.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching classes in reading and composition, critical thinking, literature, and corequisite support classes.

Other responsibilities include maintenance of office hours; active engagement with campus culture; participation in departmental responsibilities; and the willingness to create, participate in, and sustain an atmosphere of equity, which is respectful of diversity districtwide.

Qualifications

The candidate must meet the following criteria.

  • Master's in English, literature, comparative literature, or composition
  • OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in linguistics, TESL, speech, education with a specialization in reading, creative writing, or journalism.
  • OR The equivalent (see note below on how to complete equivalency)

JOB REQUIRED CORE SYSTEM COMPETENCY

The candidate must also demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students pursuant to Title 5 §53022.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

The English Department is looking for evidence of the following:

Teaching Experience/Background/Training such as, but not limited to: Academic reading, writing, and critical thinking, particularly at community colleges; Composition/rhetoric; Co-requisite support courses; Supporting diverse student populations such as career and technical/trades pathways, agriculture-related majors, underprepared, nontraditional, ELL, low-income, migrant, and special needs students; Collaborating with student tutors; Literature; Creative writing

Teaching Methodologies such as, but not limited to: Active and collaborative learning; Student-centered pedagogy; Culturally responsive pedagogy; Distance Education

Professional Commitment/Development such as, but not limited to: Committee work; Advocacy and community building to create campus culture; Curriculum development relevant to students in career and technical/trades pathways and agriculture-related major pathways; Advocacy for nontraditional students; Development and assessment of outcomes at the course, program, or institutional levels; Participatory governance; Student activities/advising/mentoring; Advocacy for campuswide equity; Conference/workshop presentations and publications

  • Unofficial copies of transcripts of college/university work. (If transcripts are not in English, include a summary of courses and grades). Official transcripts are required upon employment. Note: Applicants who have completed college or university course work at an institution outside of the United States that is not a post-secondary institution accredited by an accreditation agency recognized by either the US Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) must obtain a complete evaluation of foreign transcripts, degrees, and other relevant documents by either NACES or AICE.
  • Equivalency documents (if necessary)
  • In lieu of letters of reference, please submit a list of 3-5 current references who could address pertinent experience or equivalent competencies.

Timeline: Application review will begin after the closing date. First-level interviews will take place on Friday, April 17 and second-level interviews on Tuesday, April 21.
