Adjunct Faculty Pool: Writing

Liberal Studies at New York University is seeking part-time instructors to teach in the LS Core first-year writing sequence beginning in Spring 2026.

The Liberal Studies Core is a dynamic liberal arts curriculum that provides a global and interdisciplinary foundation for nearly 100 NYU majors. The curriculum emphasizes conceptual and spatial frameworks to trace the movement of ideas and the interconnectivity of material culture, through the study of different texts, histories, exchanges, structures and systems, languages, arts, and writing from early antiquity through contemporary times. Small seminar-style classes and close faculty-student interaction ensure the benefits of a liberal arts college within a large urban research university. We are especially interested in hiring qualified candidates who can contribute to the intellectual diversity and excellence of the Liberal Studies community.

Course Description

The Liberal Studies Core first-year writing sequence forms the foundation of a student’s writing career and shares important writing-intensive values with all other areas of Liberal Studies. Writing provides students with an important method for organizing and expressing their thoughts, and it helps them develop and enhance their critical, analytical, and interpretive skills. The two-semester Writing sequence advances the global emphasis of LS by engaging students in reading, analyzing, and interpreting works throughout the English-speaking world and, in translation, beyond it; in the classroom, instructors deal with the attendant issues of geography, political and social difference, and translation. Students also produce original work based on research and the incorporation of dialogue with other writers and thinkers.

Available course sections will meet twice weekly.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the contact hour rate for this position is $222.27. This rate is based on the collective bargaining agreement with Local 7902.

Minimum qualifications: Successful candidates will have a demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate writing. A terminal degree (PhD, EdD, or MFA) in Writing, Writing Studies, Composition, Rhetoric, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, English, English Education, Translation Studies, or a related field is required.

Candidates with demonstrated TESOL experience are strongly encouraged to apply.

All applications must be submitted through Interfolio, and include ONLY (1) a cover letter and (2) a current C.V.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Interviews to commence as soon as possible.

Liberal Studies sees equity and inclusion and belonging as essential to education and the development of leadership in a globally interconnected world. These values inform LS as a collegial and respectful environment for students, faculty and staff—with particular attention to improving the student experience. NYU affirms the value of differing perspectives on the world as we strive to build the strongest possible university with the widest reach.
