Monmouth University is seeking applications for a Counselor for the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) program. This is a grant-funded position through the State of New Jersey; continued employment is contingent upon the availability of external funding.

The candidate would be expected to: support the mission of Monmouth University and the Educational Opportunity Fund program through comprehensive support services for educationally under-prepared and economically-disadvantaged scholars; meet scholars individually and in groups to discuss areas of personal, academic and career counseling; assist in implementing the 5 week summer academy; social engagement and workshop development; work with scholars from application through graduation and beyond.

This is an in-person on-campus, non-remote position.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and manage the EOF Honor Society membership and induction ceremony.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and coordination of the EOF Summer Academy and various student development programming throughout the year (e.g., workshops, social engagement, enrichment series, leadership development, graduation celebration, etc.).
  • Create and maintain confidential files (e.g., spreadsheets, electronic student records, etc.) to track student engagement and program outcomes. Compile regular reports and assists with program and state reports (e.g., – grade reports, roster, annual report, etc.).
  • Manage caseload of assigned students by providing ongoing comprehensive support services to ensure persistence to timely graduation, to include, but are not limited to, academic, personal, financial and career counseling.
  • Educate and counsels students to increase knowledge of the financial aid process, transition to college, academic responsibilities, career preparedness, personal/crisis counseling. Make appropriate referrals to campus and community resources when necessary.
  • Assist with the screening and interviewing process of program applicants (first-time freshmen, re-admits, EOF transfers, and non-EOF transfers) in order to provide access to higher education to educationally under-prepared and economically-disadvantaged students.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with assigned colleges/departments to ensure students are maximizing utilization of campus resources.
  • Actively participate in team meetings to obtain and share information, discuss current administrative procedures, assess the effectiveness of the Program, and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities (e.g., seminars, conferences, etc.) to maintain awareness of current and changing trends in higher education and counseling. Remain knowledgeable of regulatory issues specific to the University and Educational Opportunity Fund.
  • Assist in the hiring, training and supervision of summer staff.
  • Participate on various internal and external committees, programs and activities as a representative of the EOF department.
  • Remain flexible and adaptable in work schedules and assignments to meet departmental needs.
  • Other assigned duties as needed.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Must be able to treat confidential and sensitive information appropriately
  • Experience serving a diverse student/client population from backgrounds with limited access to academic and financial resources.
  • An understanding and commitment to the role of opportunity programs and student success.
  • Effective communication (verbal and written), interpersonal, organizational, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
  • Computer literacy with standard office applications such as Microsoft Office Suite, Navigate EAB, student information systems, and other web-based platforms.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate evening or weekend programming activities (e.g., summer academy, recruitment, etc.) as needed.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing creative initiatives to meet the needs of students/clients preferred.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, Higher Education, Education, Psychology.
  • Experience in higher education, college counseling, or related student development experience in a college setting.
  • Demonstrated ability and skill in addressing the issues and factors impacting at-risk college students.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing creative initiatives to meet the needs of students/clients.
  • Ability to thrive working in a team environment, with demonstrated experience developing strong working relationships with both internal and external partners.
