About the Role

The Events and Administrative Assistant is a new role, created to support the Mile End Institute’s public engagement activities and ensure the smooth running of our day-to-day operations. The post-holder will be a core member of the Mile End Institute, based in the School of Society and Environment, and will be responsible for organising and delivering public events.

Alongside the Institute Manager, the post-holder will be the first port of call for day-to-day, “front-line” queries about the Institute’s public programme and provide critical administrative support to the Institute. They will be involved in all aspects of organising events from venue booking, publicity and registration to front of house on the night and be responsible for maintaining our relationship with the University’s Venues and Events and Ceremonies teams.

About You

The ideal candidate for this role will have appropriate relevant academic or vocational qualifications (A Levels, NVQ Level 3, BTEC Level 3) plus considerable relevant experience in event management, hospitality or administration. They will have administrative experience of working in a busy office environment (or a similar role in the event industry) and the use of large databases and IT systems. They will be able to manage complex operational matters and competing priorities as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

About the School

The Mile End Institute was founded in 2015 under the guidance of the historian and crossbench peer, Lord Hennessy of Nympsfield, and is Queen Mary University of London's primary centre for the study and public discussion of the major challenges facing British politics, political history and policymaking.

The Institute has hosted hundreds of public events including the distinguished “Hennessy Lecture Series”, produces research papers and policy briefings, and has a well-developed network of Research Fellows. Other prominent events include our highly regarded “In Conversation” series with public figures, book launches and panel discussions, hosted at Queen Mary’s Mile End campus.

About Queen Mary

At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.

Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.

We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.

Benefits

We offer competitive salaries, access to a generous pension scheme, 30 days’ leave per annum (pro-rata for part-time/fixed-term), a season ticket loan scheme and access to a comprehensive range of personal and professional development opportunities. In addition, we offer a range of work life balance and family friendly, inclusive employment policies, flexible working arrangements, and campus facilities.

Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability. We are open to considering applications from candidates wishing to work flexibly.
