Executive Dean of Teaching and Learning

Job Description

Reporting to the President, the Executive Dean of Teaching and Learning provides academic leadership of faculty, academic divisions, and the quality of teaching and learning across the institution. As the College’s Chief Academic Officer, the Executive Dean is the chief academic administrator for the College, working in collaboration with members of the Executive Leadership Team and stakeholders across campus, in the SUNY system, and among local businesses and industry partners. The Executive Dean of Teaching and Learning fosters a culture of student success. They will effectively communicate and build positive relationships with all areas of the College to advance institutional priorities. The Executive Dean provides guidance for innovative program changes, teaching and learning development, and the use of new technologies to enhance student experience and faculty development.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategic Management

  • Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team.
  • Align academic goals with the mission, values, and strategic direction of the institution.
  • Supervise direct reports, as assigned, including teaching faculty, Director of the Center for Innovation, Teaching and Learning, Division Chairs, Deans, department staff and administrators.
  • Develop and implement an Academic Master Plan to facilitate continuous improvement, innovation, and synthesis of the Student Learning Experience.
  • Serve as liaison to the Academic Affairs and Student Success Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Ensure the academic affairs budget is appropriately managed to deliver on department goals.
  • Build an academic culture at the institution, including with faculty, which is collegial and focused on mission advancement and student success.
  • Promotes the values of inclusion and belonging, civic engagement, and other SUNY values in curricula and in the department of Academic Affairs.
  • Maintain oversight of all academic spaces on campus.

Academic Quality and Standards

  • Work closely with faculty and other stakeholders to develop relevant academic programs at a pace relevant to the market and the evolving needs and demographics of students.
  • Ensure that there is an appropriate mix of course and program modalities to meet the evolving needs of students.
  • Work with the Office of Institutional Effectiveness to ensure there is a robust academic assessment process to ensure the quality and standards of academic offerings are continuously improved. Work with the Chief Financial Officer to ensure assessment influences resource allocation and investment.
  • Use data to drive effective decision-making and accountability concerning the performance of all aspects of academic affairs.
  • Maintain current academic standards related to teaching and learning, curriculum, program development, performance review and evaluation of faculty.
  • Work with the Director of the Center for Innovation, Teaching, and Learning to ensure the implementation of the department plan.
  • Ensure faculty have effective professional development and growth opportunities relevant to their discipline and the mission and goals of the institution.
  • Support the faculty governance structure of the institution including working closely with campus governance leaders, the Faculty Council, curriculum committee, and academic standards committee.
  • Ensure continuous improvement and relevancy of the General Curriculum.

Student Success

  • Work with the Vice President of Student Success to ensure courses are appropriately scheduled according to the needs of students and to maximize their academic momentum and success.
  • Ensure academic offerings are structured to ensure students have efficient and relevant academic programs.
  • Work with the Transfer Officer to ensure academic programs have meaningful and articulated pathways to transfer institutions.
  • Work with the Vice President of Student Success to monitor student success metrics and implement changes to maximize the success outcomes of the institution.

Policy and Compliance

  • Ensure all academic policies are in place, effective, and implemented.
  • Ensure all academic compliance requirements and regulations are adhered to.
  • Work with the MSCHE Accreditation Liaison Officer to ensure accreditation standards and requirements for affiliation are implemented.
  • Work with the Policy and Compliance Officer and other stakeholders to ensure all program-level assessments are successfully completed.
  • Work with Human Resources and other stakeholders to ensure the Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement is fully implemented by all responsible parties.
  • Work with campus stakeholders to attract grants to support the work of academic affairs. Ensure sponsored projects are successfully implemented including fulfilling accountability requirements.

Partnerships and External Relations

  • Collaborating closely with educational institutions, workforce partners, nonprofit organizations and the broader community to build partnerships and expand educational opportunities and programs.
  • Ensure advisory boards are in place for programs and that they enhance and advance the student learning experience.
  • Act as the primary liaison to SUNY’s Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs, NYSED and other relevant agencies.
  • Work with the Executive Director of Workforce Development to ensure educational offerings at the institution are relevant to the needs of the community.
  • Participate in external meeting, committees, and events, as required.

Performs other duties as assigned by the President.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Qualifications and experience

  • Masters degree in discipline, higher education or related field. A terminal degree is preferred.
  • Teaching experience in higher education, preferably in a Community College setting.
  • 5-7 years progressive experience in higher education.

Salary and Benefit Information

Salary range is $125,000-$135,000 and will be determined by a variety of factors including experience, education, and training/skills and certification. The College offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical and dental insurance, short-and long-term disability, generous vacation, and sick leave, paid holidays, pre-tax flexible spending accounts, retirement plans, tax-deferred compensation, as well as employee and dependent tuition waivers. PSLF waivers offered.
