Position Summary
The Executive Director of the Institute will report to, and work closely with, the Dean of the School of Public Health to develop and lead an institute that will become a hub for advancing interdisciplinary knowledge and fostering sustainable solutions to impact the most pressing challenges in health globally; bring together faculty, industry partners, thought leaders, and policy makers across disciplines; and create an environment where discovery, training, translation, innovation, and implementation converge.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
The Executive Director of the Institute will report to, and work closely with, the Dean of the School of Public Health to execute the following duties and responsibilities:
Strategic Institute Leadership:
- Lead the Institute to achieve the goals and objectives that align with the School’s 4x4 plan
- Develop a strategic plan for the Institute for the next 3 years.
- Work with School’s leadership team, University partners, and external stakeholders to execute the strategic plan.
- Collaborate across the University, within the field of Public Health and across sectors to identify the right partners to engage with the Institute.
- Conduct annual review and proposes modifications to the strategic plan to reflect changes in revenue and new opportunities, and ensures timely communications with Institute donors, key stakeholders, and other WashU leadership as appropriate.
Summit Planning, Communications and Public Relations
- Set the intellectual agenda for the Institute, including the annual summit.
- Plan for and execute an annual global summit that focuses on a particular public health challenge/issue. This will include identifying the right thought partners to participate in each summit, developing relationships and creating space for ideation.
- Lead the Institute website's strategy and content, including reviewing/approving content from fellows and other contributors.
- Ensure accurate reporting of Institute events and news.
- Oversee the production of key deliverables, including project proposals, the Institute's annual report, progress reports, white papers, and other scholarly documents prepared by fellows, faculty, and collaborators.
Grant Administration
- Oversee a call for grant submissions following the annual summit.
- Review and score submissions in collaboration with a panel and award grants based on budgeted funds.
- Track the effectiveness of the seed/grant funding.
- Report on the success of the grant awards.
- Serve as mentor/project resources to grantees.
General Administration
- Oversee administration of staff, projects, and functions, building relationships across departmental and institutional lines within and outside WashU.
- Delegate appropriate responsibilities to the team and collaborators
- Oversee four post-doctoral fellows that will contribute significantly to the work of the Institute.
Advancement
- Work with the Dean and the Executive Director of Advancement to develop opportunities for other funding to supplement the institute’s operations
Budgeting and Fiscal Oversight
- Develop the Institute’s annual budget, including summit costs, in collaboration with the team’s finance leaders
- Work closely with the Executive Director of Advancement to ensure fidelity with donor intent for the institute
This person will be a leader at the School of Public Health and will collaborate across the University and the field to move forward critical initiatives to fuel public health solutions.

Base pay is commensurate with experience.The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
