Work Schedule, Hours per week: Varies depending on department needs, 40 hours per week

Pay Range: $20.47-$26.35 and determined based on relevant years of work experience.

Position Summary: The Exhibition Preparator and Lighting Specialist shares leadership of all technical aspects of art handling, installation/de-installation, packing/unpacking, and storage of Nerman Museum collection and art objects on loan in collaboration with the Chief Preparator. This position oversees all exhibition lighting. This position also designs and fabricates all museum interpretive signage.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and 4+ Years of relevant experience.
  • Scissor Life certification.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Position Details: Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Works collaboratively with the Chief Preparator/Exhibition Designer with all aspects of museum temporary exhibitions and permanent collection installations, including the preparation of pedestals, plinths, mounting boards, mounts, temporary walls, and vitrines. Carefully handles, unpacks, and packs all artwork according to professional museum standards and in collaboration with the Registration department. Assists with the repair/preparation of gallery walls including installing and de-installing of temporary walls and the careful placement of artwork in the galleries. Manages the installation of all labels, text panels, and graphics for exhibitions in a timely manner.
  • Collaborates with the Curator and the Chief Preparator to create lighting arrangements in exhibitions and in art installations across the campus that optimally showcase the works on view. Ensures the safe and proper handling of lighting equipment, and maintains it as needed, operates a scissor lift to access lighting in galleries, navigating around installed artwork of high value. Works to maintain an up-to-date working knowledge of lighting systems and museum standards for collection care around lighting. Works with Registration to create and implement standards and processes regarding proper light levels. Researches and suggests future lighting equipment purchases to leadership during the budgeting process.
  • Works in collaboration with the Manager of Learning and Academic Engagement and other museum staff on identifying needs for interpretive content. Generates creative solutions to interpretation challenges. Designs, produces, and installs materials, which may include: exhibition labels, art object labels, vinyl, signage, environmental graphics, and wayfinding signs in the museum, as well as art object labels, vinyl, and signage in art installations across campus. Ensures that exhibitions and individual artworks in the museum and on campus have up-to-date labels that reflect current best-practices in interpretation and accessibility, that the campus collection has relevant information available for students and staff, and that exhibitions and artworks that present special challenges to interpretation are handled creatively in ways that facilitate the museum's overall goals in accessibility and inclusion. Works in partnership with Printing Services to produce materials, as well as identify ways to improve processes and to provide interpretive content in multiple formats where possible.
  • Supervises all aspects of the Chief Preparator/Exhibition Designer's role in their absence.
  • Works with outside vendors to secure additional supplies and assists with installation and storage materials needed for the collection and temporary exhibitions. Schedules Art Exhibition Technicians and contracted art handlers to assist with installation, movement, and maintenance of artworks. Manages, in collaboration with the Chief Preparator, the installation/de-installation, maintenance and general upkeep of Collection Focus Areas across the JCCC Campus, including installation of all pedestals, plinths, mounting boards, mounts, framed surfaces, vitrines, labels and other artwork signage. The Exhibition Preparator schedules Art Exhibition Technicians for cleaning and other routine maintenance of art installations.
  • Works with Registration and Curators on art storage solutions. Manages the design, building, and receipt of crates for art storage and transports and assists with receipt of artworks on loan. With the Registration department, manages maintenance of museum storage and preparatory facilities. Maintains ongoing organization of art storage in collaboration with Registration department, according to professional museum standards.
  • Purchases, rents and maintains equipment, supplies and materials as needed for art handling and installation. Maintains an organized museum prep area, including placement of all tools and supplies, and keeps a record of its inventory.
  • Maintains an open working relationship with related personnel in regional art museums and the related services on the JCCC Campus (i.e Fine Arts and Design Department, Audio Visual, Warehouse, Maintenance, and Housekeeping.)
