Job Summary

The Facilities Planning GIS Student Assistant supports campus planning, facilities, and operational initiatives by assisting with the collection, organization, analysis, and visualization of spatial data. This position provides hands-on experience applying GIS concepts to real-world projects while supporting faculty and staff with mapping, data maintenance, and basic spatial analysis.

Job Description

Typical duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collect spatial data from fieldwork, online sources, or campus records.
  • Edit and maintain GIS datasets and geodatabases.
  • Perform basic spatial analysis and geoprocessing tasks.
  • Create maps and visualizations for reports and presentations.
  • Support faculty and staff on GIS‑related research and operational projects.

Additional Job Description

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Enrolled as a degree seeking student at Florida Gulf Coast University at the time of hire and throughout the appointment.
  • Basic understanding of GIS concepts and spatial data.
  • Experience with ArcGIS Pro or ArcGIS Online
  • Strong attention to detail in data editing and map creation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with campus GIS data, facilities planning, or infrastructure mapping.
  • Familiarity with basic data management practices and geodatabases.
  • Experience collecting or validating spatial data in the field.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Promote a common purpose consistent with stated University goals and demonstrate a commitment to students and the learning environment.
  • Possess the knowledge of general written standards and procedures utilized, and have the ability to read, interpret, and follow procedural and policy manuals related to the job tasks.
  • Demonstrate the ability to respond to supervision, guidance, and direction in a positive, receptive manner and in accordance with stated policies.
  • Provide quality customer service by creating a welcoming and supportive environment.
  • Present a professional image in word, action, and attire.
  • Apply effective techniques to create working relationships with others to achieve common goals; successfully communicates and collaborates with others to achieve goals.
  • Demonstrate skills necessary to look at situations and processes critically to make recommendations for improvement.
