Position Overview

The Division of General and Gastrointestional Surgery is seeking highly qualified PhD level candidates to join its cutting-edge research team. The Division, within the Department of Surgery, wishes to expand its breadth of basic and translational research. Using a foundation of clinical care across esophageal/foregut, bariatric, and abdominal wall surgery, we seek funded researchers who can leverage this clinical excellence into basic and translational scientific success.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes, plans, designs, implements and conducts research studies; develops and writes grant proposals to seek and obtain extramural funding to support research program; obtains and maintains NIH R01 or equivalent funding;
  • Writes and publishes research in high quality peer reviewed, scientific journals; attends and makes presentations of research at national and international scientific conferences; develops national and international scholarly reputation;
  • Instructs and mentors junior scientists, doctoral and postdoctoral students, medical students, residents and fellow trainees; participates in department, college and university committees and initiatives.

Requirements

  • PhD or MD/PhD in an applicable field
  • Postdoctoral research experience in basic science research
  • Proven ability to write scientific reports and publish in scientific, peer-reviewed journals preferred
  • Current, active extramural grant funding (equivalent to NIH R01)
  • Academic experience a plus
  • Qualify for academic appointment at the Assistant, Associate or Professor level Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with previous training and experience

Department/Division Overview

The Department of Surgery, led by Dr. Timothy Pawlik, boasts a broad array of clinical, research and educational opportunities. The department is home to multiple R01 funded researchers, several training grants, and with over $15.5M in NIH funding, was ranked #11 in the Blue Ridge Rankings among departments of surgery nationally. Our investigators collectively occupy over 25,000 square feet of laboratory space within and around the medical center campus.

Ohio State has been recognized as high performing in Gastroenterology and GI Surgery by U.S. News & World Report. Our Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery, led by Dr. Ben Poulose, is a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery with a high volume of foregut surgery, bariatric surgery, advanced therapeutic endoscopy, gallbladder surgery, and hernia repair and complex abdominal wall reconstruction. Our surgeons are consistently recognized as innovators in their disciplines whose commitment to surgical excellence and novel techniques such as complex robotics and endolumenal procedures keeps us at the forefront of our field. Our Faculty are leaders in their respective fields and we continue to recruit the brightest talent to expand our divisions ability to offer the best care to our patients and pursue high impact research.

Faculty Defined

Clinical faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research.

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.
