Position Overview
The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for an open faculty position in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences for a clinical assistant professor position in Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery. Applicants should be boarded or board-eligible in either American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM-LA) or the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS-LA) with significant training in farm animal medicine and surgery.
The successful candidate will devote approximately 60-65% of their professional effort to teaching within our state-of-the-art professional veterinary curriculum, a significant portion of which will include instruction and organization of clinical skills laboratories with the Veterinary Clinical and Professional Skills Program, as well as some didactic teaching. They will also be assigned 25-30% effort to clinical service in the OSU Hospital for Farm Animals which will include patient management, client service, clinical teaching of students, and advanced training of interns and residents. The remainder of effort is split between research and scholarship, service, administration, and vacation (8%). Faculty are also expected to be involved in professional and community outreach, continuing education, committee service, and curricular development.
The Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service is a busy, haul-in hospital which provides 24/7 spectrum of veterinary care to farm animal species from both production and non-production systems including ruminants, camelids, swine, and exotic ungulates. The farm animal service has 2 residents, 2 interns, and 3 registered veterinary technicians dedicated to the service. The candidate will be joining 4 other faculty members in the service (2 ACVIM and 2 ACVS).
The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine's Veterinary Clinical and Professional Skills Program enhances patient care and client satisfaction by allowing learners to practice skills in a simulated environment before entering the workforce. The Veterinary Clinical and Professional Skills Center is a state-of-the-art education and assessment resource that includes a large open lab, seven flexible practice and communications rooms, plus a devoted 3D printing space and model workshop. Trainees are provided with enhanced learning opportunities that combine audiovisual and lecture capture technology with high and low fidelity models and simulators. The College also has other teaching venues, including an operative and clinical techniques practice lab and hands-on clinical teaching facilities on the college campus and at Finley Farm.
Performance Objectives
TEACHING DUTIES
Clinical teaching of professional students, residents, and interns in the Farm Animal Medicine and Surgery Service, in conjunction with the diagnosis and treatment of patients presented to The OSU Veterinary Medical Center.
Key teaching responsibilities in the pre-clinical Clinical Skills thread curriculum include the development and delivery of content and assessments related to core hands-on veterinary skills.
- Additional opportunities may include: teaching support in the Summer Spectrum of Care Program Skills Intensive training and the development of teaching models and simulators
CLINICAL SERVICE AND OUTREACH DUTIES
All aspects of patient care associated with a busy farm animal medicine and surgery practice including: patient management, client care, communication with referring DVMs, consulting with colleagues, medical record keeping, professional development, and participation in public relations activities.
- After-hour (emergency) duty consists of supporting the on-call house officer nightly. It is assigned as one-week intervals and is split evenly with the other four faculty of the farm animal service.
RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY DUTIES
Use of scheduled off-clinic time for preparing teaching materials, conducting research, writing for publication, and other scholarly activities.
Although extramurally funded research is not required for clinical track faculty, participation in collaborative research projects, resident, and graduate student projects is strongly encouraged.

Education and Experience Requirements
Required qualifications
- A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree.
- Boarded or board eligible in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM-LA) or the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS-LA).
- Successful completion of a large animal residency with significant resident training in farm animal/food animal/livestock medicine and surgery.
- Background in clinical teaching and/or adult education
- Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, interdisciplinary environment.
- Enthusiasm for mentoring trainees and students and contributing to their professional development.
Desired qualifications
- Experience administering clinical assessments.
- Experience with online learning platforms and educational technology
- Experience in collaborative research
