The Department of Medicine of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University announce an exceptional opportunity for an accomplished leader in academic medicine to serve as Chief of Gastroenterology. Brown Medicine is one of the largest nonprofit, academic, multi-specialty medical groups in Rhode Island that is recognized for its expertise in patient care, teaching, and research in the state.

Reporting to the Chair of Medicine, the Chief of Gastroenterology will provide the strategic leadership, direction, and coordination of administrative, clinical, educational, and research endeavors across the division. The Chief will lead the 11-full time faculty members across four inpatient and outpatient centers, a well-established fellowship program that accepts 3 fellows per year, and the distinguished specialty areas of inflammatory bowel disease, advanced and capsule endoscopy, viral hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and gastrointestinal malignancies. Inpatients services are conducted at Rhode Island Hospital, a 700-bed tertiary care and teaching hospital in the Lifespan academic health system, which is the largest teaching hospital of the Alpert Medical School.

The Chief will drive strategic and operational initiatives to support the Department of Medicine’s mission to incorporate expertise in patient care, teaching, and research, providing meaning and purpose to the work and clinical care that sets them apart from all other primary care and internal medicine practices in the state of Rhode Island. Physicians in the Division of Gastroenterology lead the inpatient services at Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center and serve a primary role in teaching, training, and mentoring the Brown medical students, residents, and fellows.

Providence, the Ocean State capital, is known for its friendly small-town feel with the culture and sophistication of a vibrant city. The city supports a thriving arts community and provides access to renowned restaurants, state parks and beautiful shorelines.

The successful candidate must qualify for a full-time faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Applicants should have attained national/international recognition in the field, evidenced by involvement in academic societies, experience in attracting extramural funding and scholarly productivity. Minimum requirements include board certification in gastroenterology, a record of successful leadership in academic medicine, excellent communication skills and a broad understanding of the health care landscape. The individual will be expected to have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
