Position Overview
Position Summary
Under the direction of the Advising Center Director, the First-Year Experience Coordinator will be a full-time split position between overseeing the First-Year Experience (FYEX) course and advising (50% FYEX Leadership/50% Advising; as the split shifts seasonally). This full-time position will participate in the ENMU Quality Initiative (QI) and other initiatives, particularly as they relate to first-year retention.
Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities:
First Year Experience (FYEX) Leadership
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise First-Year Experience (FYEX) instructors.
- Design, plan, and coordinate all aspects of FYEX programming, including scheduling, communication, guest speakers, workshops, and community-building events.
- Coordinate selection of FYEX textbooks and materials; prepare supplementary First-Year course materials; schedule financial aid workshops, schedule computer lab training sessions for FYEX sections, and manage planning for other course-related activities.
- Collaborate closely with professional advisors, faculty, and student affairs partners to integrate Quality Initiate (QI) and ENMU initiatives with advising campaigns and early alert interventions.
- Hire and train peer facilitators/mentors, as funding is available.
- Conduct periodic meetings during the semester for FYEX instructors; provide updates to keep instructors on track with course objectives.
- Develop and execute assessment strategies to evaluate program outcomes, student learning, and engagement; analyze data and produce reports and recommendations for continuous improvement.
- Support campus retention efforts, particularly as they impact first-year students.
- Assist Campus Life with new student orientation in August, with grouping students to ensure a seamless transition for new students.
- Participate in individual and team professional development.
- Performs other job-related duties and projects assigned in support of the University's mission, core values, and goals.
Advising
- Assist new incoming first-year students, readmit, and post-baccalaureate students in the development of an educational plan, including but not limited to choosing a program of study and/or clarifying educational goals.
- Educate students about course planning and registration processes, and verifying course prerequisites and requirements.
- Planning, implementing, and presenting workshops, including but not limited to Student Success, Freshman Seminar, and Degree Evaluation, both individually and in collaboration with other departments.
- Help set up, take down, and assist at various campus events such as open house, Major Fest, Dawg Days, special registration events, and other campus activities.
- Meeting with prospective students and guests to provide information about ENMU's programs of study and to discuss individual educational goals.
- Serve on ENMU committees as designated or requested.
- Refer to available on-and off-campus resources to address individual needs, including career and personal counseling.
- Interpret test results relevant to placement decisions and determine student readiness for university courses.
- Make appropriate referrals for students perceived as at-risk, acts as an advocate when appropriate, and serves as a source of support to students.
- Regular and predictable attendance required

Minimum Job Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree (master's preferred) and a minimum of two years of experience related to the duties specified.
- Experience working with first-year student programs or student success initiatives in higher education.
Preferred:
- Experience with program assessment and data-informed decision-making.
- Proficiency with student information systems (prefer Banner).
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate across departments and build student-centered programming.
- Demonstrated ability to design, lead, and assess programs.
- Knowledge of issues related to first-year students' transition into college
- Experience teaching first-year students.
- Knowledge of the goals, mission, objectives, structure, and operations of ENMU.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong organizational, communication, interpersonal, and program management skills.
- Knowledge of first-year transition and student development theories.
- Ability to analyze retention data.
- Proficiency with student information systems (prefer Banner).
Working Conditions
Physical Demand and Working Conditions:
- Work is sedentary in nature and at times requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally and/or a consistent amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
- Work is performed during normal work hours, but weekend and evening work is sometimes required
