As a research-oriented academic unit, FHS has over 40 individual research laboratories, four research centres and four core facilities. All are equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment that nicely incorporate into an outstanding infrastructure for high-quality research outputs.

Since the establishment in 2013, FHS has made remarkable progresses, and the number and quality of publications in internationally renowned journals are enhancing on an annual basis. Publications have been published in Nature, Lancet, Advanced Science, etc. These contributions have benefitted the ranking of UM, and several related disciplines, namely pharmacology and toxicology, clinical medicine, psychiatry/ psychology and biology/ biochemistry, now rank among the top 1% of the world’s Essential Science indicators (ESI). And UM has achieved a record high between No. 126 and No. 150 for Life Sciences and between No. 151 and No. 175 for Medical and Health in the THE World University Rankings in recent years.

With the approval of Ministry of Education in 2020, UM established the first Frontiers Science Center in Hong Kong and Macao in 2021, namely “Frontiers Science Center for Precision Oncology”. This Center carries out cutting-edge scientific research of common cancers in Macao. In addition to Precision Oncology, FHS further focuses on another nine research directions as follows: (1) Precision Oncology, (2) Stem Cell and Development, (3) Aging, Neural and Metabolism Disorders and Infectious Diseases, (4) Biomedical Imaging, (5) Data Science, (6) Drug Development, (7) Neuropsychiatry, (8) Structural Biology, (9) Translational Medicine, and (10) Public Health.
