Full/Associate/Assistant Professor in Industrial, Computational, and Applied Mathematics--Fall 2026

The Mathematics Department at The University of Tennessee (UT), Knoxville, seeks exceptional candidates to fill a Full/Associate/Assistant (i.e., open-ranked) Professor position, depending on the candidates’ qualifications, in the area of Industrial, Computational, and Applied Mathematics (especially differential equations, statistics, computational mathematics, data science, mathematical biology, and scientific computing) starting August 1, 2026. Prior experience with an industrial mathematics educational program and related industrial collaborations is preferred. The successful candidate is expected to lead the development of the department’s new Industrial Mathematics Master's Program.

In recent years, the Department of Mathematics has steadily increased its research prominence, graduate student training diversification, and teaching excellence both within the University and in the larger mathematical community. The faculty is highly active, and their research has been supported by external funding agencies and industry. Opportunities exist to collaborate with researchers in the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Engineering, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), and the UT-Oak Ridge Innovative Institute, the premier NSF-supported Center for Advanced Materials and Manufacturing (CAMM), and the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS).

The University of Tennessee at Knoxville is the flagship university in the Tennessee state higher education system. Starting salaries for TT/T faculty in the Mathematics Department are very competitive. The state of Tennessee is in strong fiscal condition, and the University has provided salary increases for the past ten consecutive years.

Knoxville is a vibrant and diverse medium-sized city next to the Tennessee River and Appalachian Mountains in East Tennessee, with Nashville, Chattanooga, Asheville, and Atlanta all within an approximate 3-hour radius. Knoxville has ample opportunities for shopping, numerous cultural attractions, a relatively low cost of living, and is in close proximity to both the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and over 650,000 acres of national forest.

The University is beginning a next-level initiative aimed both at substantially elevating the University's national reputation for impactful research, scholarship, and creative activity and at assembling a roster of faculty committed to delivering one of the nation's best educational experiences for undergraduate and graduate students.

Minimum Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent degree in mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, or data science is required at the time of application. To be eligible for appointment as an associate professor or a full professor, the selected candidate must have a demonstrated strong record of teaching, research, student advising, and service commensurate with a faculty appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • For an appointment at the Full Professor rank: Internationally recognized contributions and leadership in Industrial, Computational, and Applied Mathematics. Demonstrated exceptionally strong research publication record. Consistent track record for obtaining funding for the research programs, appropriate for the field of study. Leadership as a PI or co-PI, or participation as a Senior Personnel in interdisciplinary teams supported by an external source. Consistent track record for collaboration with and funding from industry. Effective, high-quality teaching skills, and ability to effectively mentor undergraduate and graduate students, and postdocs.
  • For an appointment at the Associate Professor rank: Recognized contributions and potential for leadership in Industrial, Computational, and Applied Mathematics. Demonstrated highly strong research publication record. Potential for consistent track record for obtaining funding for the research programs, appropriate for the field of study. Potential for leadership as a PI or co-PI, or participation as a Senior Personnel in interdisciplinary teams supported by an external source. Demonstrated strong interests in pursuing industrial collaboration and funding. Effective, high-quality teaching skills, and ability to effectively mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
  • For an appointment at the Assistant Professor rank: Contributions in Industrial, Computational, and Applied Mathematics. Demonstrated strong research publication record. Potential for obtaining funding for the research programs, appropriate for the field of study. Potential for participation as a PI/co-PI/Senior Personnel in interdisciplinary teams supported by an external source. Have strong interests in pursuing industrial collaboration and funding. Effective, high-quality teaching skills, and ability to effectively mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
