Basic Functions: 10-Month Tenure Track Position. Initial salary placement ranges from $67,886 to $106,308, based upon education and experience. The current faculty salary schedule includes five classes and twenty steps with a maximum annual salary of $142,425.

Representative Duties (Essential Functions):

  • Must be present on campus to teach face-to-face classes and hold in-person office hours.
  • Provide instruction using various modalities to include in-person instruction, facilitate learning, and demonstrate subject matter knowledge and/or expertise in Criminal Justice courses in accordance with approved Victor Valley College curriculum and established course outlines.
  • Provide instruction, facilitate learning, and demonstrate subject matter knowledge and/or expertise in courses certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
  • Participate in curriculum development, the evaluation and revision of courses, course materials, instructional methods, self-study, program review and master plan.
  • Serve on department/college committees.
  • Teach in person, on site, and/or by other modalities in accordance with the district collective bargaining agreement.
  • Advise students on academic matters.
  • Maintain required student attendance and scholastic records and submit in accordance with published deadlines.
  • Willingness to develop and/or teach online courses and participate in technical online training.
  • Prepare and grade class assignments and examinations.
  • Provide input and participate with local advisory committee.
  • Post and maintain regular office hours in accordance with prevailing policy.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills, both orally and in writing.
  • Maintain competency in the field.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of students and colleagues.
  • Participate in assessment, evaluation, and planning of Student Learning Outcomes and Program Learning Outcomes, Program Review, Curriculum Development.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional experience OR any associate degree and six (6) years of professional experience in Administration of Justice or related field OR the equivalent.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must qualify as POST Coordinator or Director, to include possession of a POST Supervisor or Management Certificate. Supervisor or Management Certificate is required to qualify as a coordinator.
  • Must have sworn, first-level supervisory experience in a POST agency.
  • Must have completed POST Academy Director/Coordinator Orientation course prior to start of assignment.
  • Within one year must complete POST Director/Coordinator course.
  • Possession of a POST supervisor or management certificate.
  • POST certified 40 - hour Academy Instructor Certification Course (AICC).
  • POST certified Firearms Instructor Course or Defensive Tactics Instructor course.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AICC (Academy Instructor Certification Course) completion. Instructor certification in specialized subjects as listed in section 1070(b).
  • A master's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or any discipline related to criminal justice, public administration or forensic science.
  • Experience teaching criminal justice academic courses at the community college level.
  • Experience teaching POST certified courses in law enforcement.
  • Experience as a POST certified Academy Instructor, and/or Academy Coordinator.

Must have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Knowledge of:

  • Developing course syllabi
  • Fostering inclusive environments for student learning
  • Integrating accessible practices into course design and teaching strategies
  • Teaching and supporting students across multiple modalities including, online, hybrid, remote, HyFlex, and correspondence while maintaining engagement and accessibility.
  • Maintaining compliance with all third-party accrediting bodies by keeping required credentials, certifications, and regulatory standards current when applicable.

Ability to:

  • Work effectively in person through clear communication, collaboration, and adaptability in diverse professional settings.
  • Remain current in one's discipline through ongoing professional development, research, and engagement with emerging trends and best practices.
  • Use advanced technology in the classroom
  • Work well with others
  • Use Canvas or other LMS platforms
  • Interact with others (faculty, staff, students, administration)

Working Environment: Office, classroom, lab and/or on-line environment. Position requires ability to communicate and exchange information. The assignment may include day, weekend, and/or evening classes on campus and/or at off campus locations. Position requires ability and schedule flexibility to accommodate active participation in College and Department Outreach Events such as College and Career Fairs and College and Community Presentations.
