General Maintenance Worker
Job Description
Bemidji State University (BSU) invites applicants to join our team as a General Maintenance Worker. The General Maintenance Worker will provide daily cleaning and maintenance services for Bemidji State University.
Responsibilities of the General Maintenance Worker include: Performing general maintenance and cleaning to include, but not limited to, elevators, kitchens, hallways, lobbies, lounges, restrooms, corridors, stairways, offices, closets, supply rooms, storage rooms, public areas, laundry rooms, laundry machines, basements, tunnels and other work areas in residential and academic buildings at BSU. Performing detailed cleaning and maintenance of assigned areas. Other duties include, vacuuming, cleaning rugs and upholstery, mopping, sweeping, stripping and waxing floors, changing light bulbs, emptying trash and recycle containers, washing walls and polishing other surfaces, washing windows, snow removal, performing monthly check on fire extinguishers, carpet extraction through various areas and buildings, and providing conference groups amenities as required. Percent of Time: 40%
Maintaining the serviceability of all equipment and tools, notifying supervisor of need for replacement of equipment and supplies. Operating custodial equipment, such as industrial sweepers, and using a variety of cleaning and sanitizing agents in performing tasks as necessary. Percent of Time: 35%
Maintaining proper labeling, dilution, and understanding use of all chemical and cleaning products. Wearing personal protective equipment. Adhering to safety regulations so that the University is in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and codes. Applying knowledge of applicable safety precautions and procedures. Securing work area as required. Percent of Time: 10%
Performing other duties as assigned within the realm of the General Maintenance Worker specifications and individual abilities as requested by supervisor to fulfill the goals of BSU facilities Percentage of time: 10%
Monitoring building integrity and condition and performing general maintenance duties as necessary. Informing Supervisor of maintenance, equipment and supply needs. Ordering cleaning supplies as needed. Percentage of time: 5%
Salary Range: Depends on Qualifications; current pay range is $20.51 - $25.43 per hour.
Minimum Qualifications
Knowledge of different types of flooring sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance. Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of them safely.
Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to make minor repairs or and operate safely.
Experience keeping simple records, performing assigned tasks with limited direction, and following oral/written instructions.
Preferred Qualification
High School Diploma or GED.
Six months related experience.
Ability to communicate with customers, employees, and other individuals to answer questions and explain information. (This requires common courtesy, tact, interest in positive problem solving, empathy, and the ability to organize ideas logically.)
Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
Ability to work effectively alone or in a team environment.
Ability to use business software such as email, word processing, internet to access document data and training.

Environmental Conditions
The work environmental characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of his job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Employee performs majority of duties in offices, conference and meeting rooms, university buildings and outdoors. This position is exposed to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, cleaning chemicals and their fumes, dust, dirt, confined areas and high places as required by maintenance tasks, and noise form air handlers, electrical switching panels, lawn mower, and snow blower. Safety precautions are to be adhered to at all times. Incumbent may work extended and evening hours during various days of the week.
Physical Factors
Constant: Determine, perceive, observe and estimate, assess hazards. Position self to, move through buildings (Traverse, ascend, descend).
Occasional: Maintaining a stationary position for long periods of time, communicating effectively with customers / stakeholders. Move / Transport up to 50 pounds.

In accordance with the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MinnState) Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, faculty and staff driving on college/university business, who use a rental or state vehicle, shall be required to complete a vehicle Use Agreement form and conform to MinnState?s vehicle use criteria and consent to motor vehicle records check annually.
