Summary
Use appropriate online teaching methods to facilitate student learning for Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Science courses. Successful candidate either can teach from remote or on campus. But priority will be given to applicant who are willing to be on campus.
Duties
- Teaching responsibilities consist of 12 credit hours per semester, comprising of lectures and labs [(Spring: Introduction to GISS lecture + lab, Introduction to Remote Sensing lecture + lab, GIS Modeling and Programming lecture + lab; Fall: Intro. To GISS lecture + lab, Spatial Analysis in GIS lecture + lab, Web Mapping and WebGIS lecture + lab, and GIS Internship (as needed)].
- Primary responsibilities will be instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses in the GIS certificate and minor.
- Develops syllabi, maintains materials, and supplies for the classes assigned.
- Ensures availability of software licenses, remote sensing datasets and web-mapping platforms for instructional use. Works with IT to ensure installation of appropriate GIS software on university computers.
- Mentor students pursuing GIS, Earth and Environmental Science minors and related tracks within the Sustainable Development degree plans. Integrate field-based, project-based, and applied-learning experiences into instruction as appropriate.
- Collaborate with institutional partners to integrate GIS applications across disciplines.
- Collaborate with community partners to develop local and regional GIS capacity.
- Conduct research or applied projects in geospatial applications suited to a small, rural, teaching-focused university; involve students in research and projects.
- Supervises student research projects, practicums, and applied GIS projects in collaboration with colleagues and community partners.
- Maintains a safe working environment and complies with all state and federal safety regulations.
- Adapts courses to current technology applicable to the discipline and teach online and/or televised courses as needed.
- Participates in departmental and University committees and special projects.
- Provides a broad range of administrative and supervisory functions. Supervises assigned staff in accordance with WNMU personnel practices including recruitment, training, performance evaluation, guidance, etc. Participates in the process of ongoing personal and professional development. Maintains comprehensive communication among all contacts (internal and external). Models professional standards and ethics in accordance with WNMU philosophy.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education/Background
Master's degree in GIS or closely related field is required with successful experience and broad background in the earth sciences and geographic information systems sciences. Ph.D. in in Geographic Information Systems Science or related relevant field is strongly preferred. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.
Job Knowledge
The successful candidate should possess a broad background in GIS and will be required to teach over a two-year period undergraduate and graduate courses including the following: Introduction to GIS plus lab (5 cr), Spatial Analysis in GIS plus lab (4cr), Web Mapping and WebGIS (3 Cr), Introduction to Remote Sensing plus lab (4 cr), GIS Modeling and Programming plus lab (4 cr), and GIS Internship (3 cr, as needed). The successful candidate must be prepared to teach online, with priority given to candidates able to provide on campus instruction. Should have experience working with underprepared students in a small classroom environment. Must be able to adapt to instructional needs of the department depending on circumstances. Must become knowledgeable of University policies and procedures. Must be able to handle multiple deadlines and maintain accuracy. Must be sensitive to cultural differences within the University and community. Must be fluent in ESRI and Microsoft Office Applications.
Working Conditions/ Physical Demands (With or Without Accommodations)
Normal classroom and laboratory environment. May be required to lift normal office equipment and materials. Visual acuity to read information from computer screens, forms and other printed materials and information. Able to speak (enunciate) clearly in conversation and general communication. Hearing ability for verbal communication/conversation/responses via telephone, telephone systems, and face-to-face interactions. Manual dexterity for typing, writing, standing and reaching, flexibility, body movement for bending, crouching, walking, kneeling and prolonged sitting.

Salary Range: $64,297 w/o terminal degree to $69,743 with terminal degree
