With guidance from Finger Lakes Institute (FLI) and Finger Lakes Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management (FL-PRISM) staff, Giant Hogweed Technicians support control and monitoring efforts for giant hogweed (Heracleum mantegazzianum) populations throughout the Finger Lakes region. Technicians work as part of a specialized field crew to conduct surveys, implement manual and chemical control methods, document treatment outcomes, and assist with follow-up monitoring.

This position involves working in sensitive field conditions, adhering to strict safety protocols, and interacting with landowners, partners, and the public regarding giant hogweed identification, risks, and management. This seasonal position provides hands-on experience in high-priority invasive species management and coordinated regional response.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement manual control techniques, including root cutting and seed head removal
  • Assist with chemical control efforts, including mixing, application, and equipment cleanup
  • Properly use, maintain, and clean personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Accurately collect, record, and submit field data
  • Navigate and work in challenging field environments
  • Communicate clearly with crew, supervisors, and partner organizations
  • Represent FLI and FL-PRISM professionally when interacting with partners and stakeholders
  • Assist with public outreach and education related to giant hogweed as needed
  • Operate and assist with campus-owned vehicles and transport equipment to field sites
  • Participate in required safety, pesticide, and program trainings
  • Work independently or in small teams with minimal supervision in remote field settings

OTHER INFORMATION

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position. The position is based out of Hobart and William Smith Colleges, in the heart of the Finger Lakes. The Finger Lakes PRISM is one of eight PRISMs supported via funding from the New York State Environmental Protection Fund as administered by NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Pay range is $20-$21/ hr.

Qualifications

  • Experience with environmental fieldwork, vegetation management, or invasive species control
  • Willingness to perform both manual and chemical control methods for invasive plants
  • Willingness to work with pesticides/herbicides following all safety and regulatory requirements
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions and rugged terrain
  • Ability to follow detailed safety procedures and use specialized PPE consistently
  • Comfort with field tools and gear: hand tools, backpack sprayers, GPS, tablets, required PPE
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively as part of a field team
  • Ability to make sound decisions in the field and identify when to escalate safety/access concerns
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable motor vehicle record; reliable transportation to meeting locations required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience controlling giant hogweed or other high-risk invasive plant species
  • Familiarity with herbicide application techniques and invasive plant management best practices
  • Experience working near water bodies, road rights-of-way, or on private property
  • Pesticide Applicator License (or willingness to obtain during employment)
  • Experience with data collection platforms such as iMapInvasives or similar systems
