Summary of Position
The Geography and GIS Instructor provides high-quality, student-centered instruction across a range of Geography and introductory GIS courses, emphasizing physical, human, and regional geography concepts as well as foundational geospatial skills. This part-time role supports student learning by preparing and delivering course content in face-to-face, hybrid, remote, or online formats, which may be scheduled during daytime, evening, or weekend hours. The instructor is responsible for assessing student performance, maintaining accurate records in D2L, and offering timely, constructive feedback. Effective communication with students, colleagues, and the department chair-as well as participation in department meetings-is essential.
The position requires professionalism, respect, clear expectations, and the ability to integrate technology and geospatial tools into diverse learning environments. Although the role involves no supervisory duties, occasional training or meetings may occur outside regular hours.
The finalist must designate Colorado as their primary work location, including online instruction, and may work up to 28 hours per week for up to nine months depending on departmental need. The compensation for this position is $1,177.73 to $1,294.58/credit hour, commensurate with education and experience. This is a part-time, FLSA exempt temporary staff position. This position has been exempted from the State Classified System.
Qualifications
Required knowledge, skills & abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate technology into the classroom.
- Ability to set clear expectations and provide timely, constructive feedback.
- Ability to collaborate professionally in department meetings and academic settings.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to non-traditional learning environments and varied student needs
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with students, colleagues, and the department chair.
- Technology integration skills, especially related to GIS software and digital learning tools.
Required Qualifications:
- A Master's degree from a fully accredited institution in Geography or a closely related field and at least 18 graduate hours in Geography.
- 30 credit hours of Geography teaching experience in higher education.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 30 credit hours of post-secondary experience teaching Physical Geography, World or Regional Geography and/or Human/Cultural Geography.
- Demonstrated knowledge of GIS and experience using non-traditional learning environments.
Physical & Cognitive Demands

- Occasionally moves, positions, and transports files and office materials weighing up to 10 lbs.
- This is largely a sedentary role. This position operates in an office environment and constantly uses a computer, and routinely uses standard office equipment including phones, copiers, etc.
- The person in this position constantly communicates with internal and external constituents and students. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
- Cognitive demands include comparing, copying, computing, compiling, analyzing, coordinating, synthesizing, negotiating, communicating, instructing, and interpersonal skills.
