Graduate Student Success Advisor
Under the general supervision of the Director of Graduate Student Success, the Graduate Student Success Advisor will advise students in the development of meaningful education and career plans; promote students' intellectual and personal growth; discuss and clarify educational goals that align with career outcomes; help students acquire relevant information and university services; interpret institutional, general education, and program requirements; evaluate and monitor student academic and career progress, course choice, and class schedule in the context of student life and career goals. The Graduate Student Success Advisor will evaluate student learning progress, career goals, and academic stressors and identify how course selection interacts with internship and employment plans. The incumbent will analyze student information system data to better understand particular student populations' educational and career challenges. Assist in connecting students with career and networking opportunities. The incumbent will perform a holistic career and academic advising approach that guides the student in navigating professional academic training with career achievements at graduation. This position does not offer remote modality, the expectation for this position is on-campus presence.
The full salary range for this position is $54,200 to $93,200 annually. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff. As a university employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.
Requirements
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training. Required
- Advanced degree in Counseling, Student Development, Education, or other related area. Preferred
Experience Requirements
- 4 - 7 years of related experience. Required
- Minimum of 2 years of experience advising graduate or professional school students. Preferred
- Thorough knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements. Preferred
Minimum Requirements
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, identifying measures of system performance and the actions to improve performance.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
- Knowledge of complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization for international students and scholars.
- Interpersonal skills.

- Solid verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability in problem identification and reasoning.

Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

Key Responsibilities
- Applying professional student services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization. Student services include and not limited to: Academic Advising aligns to complete programs within the program timeline. Aligning career goals and outcomes to the academic training, and professional development. Career Counseling: Advises department/college/school students on the job market process, and the standards and norms specific to the student's field of study; advises on summer internship programs; develops and maintains network of departments and regional firms interested in hiring summer students. Collaborating with admissions and other campus partners to provide on boarding support that ensures a holistic student support. (35%)
- Identifies and cultivates potential employers. Work in collaboration within the team to support job fairs to be successful and serve the students need. Identifies and cultivates potential employers to attend speaker series, industry panels. Develops and enhances an alumni recruitment network. Plans, designs, and provides workshops for students, such as information about the organization, or academic strategies and enrichment programs. (15%)
- Academic Advising: Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with chair/ dean and faculty, and with other departments. Work closely with the enrollment management team to provide annual and quarterly feedback on the curriculum from the student's perspective, class schedule, and student feedback overall. (10%)
- Financial Aid: Oversees the administration, evaluation, and awarding of student fellowships, grants, scholarships, and other awards; advises students on financial aid options of the organization and extra-mural fellowship opportunities; oversees processes for equitable assignment of Graduate Student Instructors (GSIs) and coordinates GSI assignments each term. (10%)
- Student Conduct: Responsible for interpreting organization policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination. (10%)
- Student Orientation: Oversees and may conduct orientations of new students. Work to develop the orientation content and activities to ensure appropriate guidance to support student's academic and professional journeys at the School of Business. Events: Plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as commencements. (10%)
- Provides advice and assistance to students and scholars regarding complex U.S. visa and immigration procedures, compliance issues, and employment eligibility/authorization. Coordinates and implements programs and workshops to support and retain international students/scholars. Makes referrals to off campus and community resources. (5%)
