As a member of the Division of Physics, Mathematics & Astronomy (PMA) team, the Graphic Designer must be visually creative, organized, and technically savvy. Reporting to the Division Operations Officer (DOO), the Graphic Designer should have a broad knowledge of all aspects of design, with an emphasis on websites, digital design, and a focus on managing the design and maintenance of publications (both digital and print), newsletters, emails, and presentations as well as creating design layouts. Specific projects within the Graphic Designer’s purview may include “This Week @ PMA” digital newsletter, the Division website including each department’s sub-websites and materials to support other PMA events, programs, and lectures.
The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively with team members in PMA as well as partner closely with other individuals and groups across campus. The ability to adeptly manage feedback from multiple stakeholders while also maintaining a strong artistic vision and having the ability to communicate that vision is critical.
Essential Job Duties
- Working closely with PMA Division faculty and staff, design and integrate website content using current Caltech templates. Collect data, images, media events and function as a resource in enhancing the visual experience for various websites, digital publications, and event materials.
- Create designs, concepts, and sample layouts, based on knowledge of layout principles and esthetic design concepts.
- Oversee digital and print layout and design projects across platforms, with a particular focus on and understanding for how audiences may interact with content depending on the platform.
- Manage all aspects of the development and design of visual assets for the Division publications, both print and digital, including creating the assets and/or identifying illustrations, photographs, slideshows, infographics, charts, graphs, PowerPoints, video/animations, and other visual assets to enhance presentation of the Division.
- Serve as the primary liaison within the Division regarding implementing and maintaining the Division’s visual identity, responding to questions on design standards, aesthetics, and efficacy of their projects.
- Provide design support for one-offs from the leadership which may include print work, PowerPoints, digital and production work as needed.
- Provide assistance with photography, videography, and photo management.
- Assist with production work (Photoshop, Illustrator etc.)
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or equivalent.
- 1 year of experience in graphic design.
- Familiarity with web design principles and content management systems (specifically Wagtail, WordPress, Squarespace).
- Proficiency in industry-standard design tools and software (Adobe Creative Suite).
- Strong production skills in Photoshop and Illustrator.
- Familiarity with Mailchimp, PowerPoint and MS Word.
- Knowledge of user-centered design thinking methodologies and the ability to research the target audience.
- Experience with brand design and management.
- Ability to translate a vision or concept into a variety of platforms, to follow creative direction and conceptualize ideas.
- An understanding of visual storytelling.
- Initiative to do research and problem-solve as well as research new software and/or design concepts.
- The ability to work independently and collaboratively and manage multiple projects.
- Awareness of industry trends in digital and print design.

Hiring Range
$33.00 - $38.00 Per Hour
The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
