Job Summary

Recreation & Wellbeing at the University of Wisconsin–Madison is seeking a self-motivated Grounds & Facility Technician I with a passion for outdoor grounds maintenance. We are looking for a mechanically inclined team member and offer on-the-job training for individuals willing to learn and expand their skill set. Working at Recreation & Wellbeing facilities provides a dynamic environment where no two days are the same. This temporary position is a unique opportunity to acquire new skills, including basic building repairs, outdoor field maintenance, and light mechanical work.

Responsibilities include the safe and skilled operation of zero-turn lawn mowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, utility vehicles, snow removal equipment, and various hand and power tools. Daily tasks include lawn mowing and string trimming across more than 40 acres of athletic fields and surrounding areas, maintaining and grooming approximately 12 acres of synthetic athletic fields, and maintaining sand volleyball courts. This role also supports trash and debris cleanup across outdoor sports and recreation facilities and assists with the maintenance of grounds equipment and related sports equipment.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists with inventory and distribution of deliveries to appropriate entities under close supervision
  • Assists with routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness
  • Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed
  • Responsible for mowing natural grass and maintaining/grooming artificial turf
  • Maintains clean and clear lawns, athletic fields, outdoor courts, and walkways to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • Escalates and documents issues according to established policies and procedures
  • Sets up and tears down equipment for institutional meetings and events
  • Utilizes basic equipment to repair and maintain basic machinery, equipment, and facility property under close supervision to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation

Compensation:

Minimum $20 Hourly. Depending on qualifications the hourly rate for a Facility Technician I position ranges from $20 to $23 per hour. Actual pay is negotiable and will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years relative experience
  • Independently operate related grounds maintenance equipment, perform inspections, monitor cleanliness and general condition of sports fields, equipment, and facilities

Additional Details:

  • Typical work schedule is 7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday-Friday. On an occasional basis, exercise flexibility to work evening or weekend hours.
  • This is a temporary appointment that will last up to 1,040 total hours.
  • Candidates must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and perform lifting regularly up to 50 lbs., occasionally up to 100 lbs.
  • Candidates must have a valid Wisconsin Driver's License

Education:

Required: High School Diploma
