Job Description
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking a Hazardous Waste Coordinator to serve as the primary point of contact for generators of hazardous waste at UMKC. This position exists to ensure the safe and legal receipt, inventory, and management of hazardous waste. The position involves management of waste materials generated from a variety of sources including laboratories, shops, studios, and construction sites. The successful candidate will coordinate hazardous material and hazardous waste activities at two generator sites - one Large Quantity Generator (LQG) and one Small Quantity Generator (SQG).
Nature of Work:
This role is responsible for managing the full lifecycle of hazardous waste, including receipt, inventory, collection, storage, and disposal. The position requires hands-on work with hazardous materials and the ability to respond to chemical releases. The coordinator will also train and educate faculty, staff, and students on proper hazardous waste management procedures and develop supporting guidance documents.
Additional Responsibilities Include:
- Explain regulations that are sometimes complex or confusing.
- Inspect operations generating or having the potential to generate hazardous waste.
- Effectively communicate University policies to faculty, staff, and students.
- Coordinate with other EHS team members to ensure a high level of customer service.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Key Responsibilities
- This position serves as the department's subject matter expert (SME) for hazardous material and hazardous waste compliance and is responsible for identifying conditions and/or practices that fail to meet applicable regulations or policies. Use of a computer and electronic database are essential functions.
- Perform hazardous waste determinations.
- Develop and prepare waste profiles.
- Perform waste record certifications
- Analyze and maintain data related to waste generation and disposal.
- Recognize hazardous conditions related to the storage, use, and disposal of chemicals.
- Assist with waste pick up requests from customers.
- Transport hazardous chemicals in compliance with applicable regulations.
- Utilize and maintain the hazardous waste management database.
- Train faculty, staff, and students on hazardous waste handling, storage, and disposal procedures.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related/relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Science
- Ability to complete Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) training within 90-days of hire is required.
- Current Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification and/or the ability to complete HAZWOPER training within 6-months of hire.
- Ability to complete International Air Transport Association (IATA) or Department of Transportation (DOT) training within 90-days of hire.
- Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) credential preferred
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $70,000 to $76,000 annually.
Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
Grade: Salary Plan # GGS-10
