Job Description Summary

The Head Coach administers, coordinates, and recruits for the athletic program. They provide the leadership and coaching expertise that is required in preparing a team to represent the College in an exemplary manner at all practice sessions and scheduled intercollegiate athletic contests. They monitor student athlete study hall and provides on campus assistance for all student athletes. Head Coaches are responsible for the overall development and advancement of a competitive athletic program while demonstrating high moral and ethical standards and positive sportsmanship. The Head Coach establishes guidelines regarding team practices, conditioning, training and other team responsibilities. He/she is responsible for the confirmation of eligibility of each student athlete and supervises assistant coaches, volunteers and part-time staff.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience coaching/assistant coaching at the high school or collegiate level. Volunteer coaching/assistant coaching experience will also be accepted.
  • Be certified in Adult CPR / AED and First Aid.
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Possess a suitable motor vehicle driving record to ensure the safe and legal transportation of student athletes and coaching staff.

Criteria

CRITERIA : The following criteria, which are not the sole criteria used in the final hiring decision, will be used to review the applications of those persons who meet the stated minimum qualifications and to select those qualified applicants who will be interviewed. Other information and observations made during the interview process may be considered in the selection process. A Resume/CV and cover letter are required with the application. ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provide the leadership and coaching expertise that is required to prepare a competitive team to represent the College in an exemplary manner at all practice sessions and scheduled intercollegiate athletic contests.
  • Encourage and promote student athletes to make academic progress and attend all classes. Develop both positive and punitive actions to promote academic progress and class attendance.
  • Apply all rules and regulations governing eligibility and alcohol/drug use as required by the College; the Intercollegiate Athletic department, and all conference and associations in which membership is held.
  • Apply all rules and regulations regarding budget, squad size; length of season; number of contests per week; number of pre-season practice contests; number of pre-season, in-season, and post-season tournaments; total number of seasonal contests, etc.
  • Develop practice schedules and directly supervise squad members during practice sessions, scheduled intercollegiate athletic contests, and/or travel, starting at the beginning date for practice sessions and continuing to the last scheduled date of competition.
  • Work cooperatively with the college administration and athletic department. Keep the athletic administration abreast of any relevant issues associated with your team and/or sport.
  • Participate in and coordinate fundraising activities designed to provide support for equipment, travel, and student-athlete recruitment for your team.
  • Cultivate an environment for your team that promotes good sportsmanship, open communication, team discipline, and respect for all that enter the athletic arena of participation. Promote an atmosphere that discourages verbal, physical, or sexual harassment on any Prince George’s Community College student, college employee, officials, spectator, or opposing student athlete.
  • Attend department and state/region coaches’ association meetings. Submit appropriate statistical reports and information on time to the NJCAA, Region 20, Maryland JUCO Conference and the Athletic department.
  • Develop a recruitment plan and actively recruit students/athletes.
  • Support the philosophy and mission of the College.
  • Assist in identifying student athlete academic issues and student athlete needs to improve retention and graduation rates
  • Assist with academic progress of all student athletes, using college technology
  • Serve as a van driver for intercollegiate athletic contests and scrimmages.

  • Demonstrate strong leadership qualities and have the ability to delegate effectively
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong planning ability with excellent organizational skills
  • Ability and willingness to work outside of normal hours including evening and weekends
  • Must be self-motivated with the ability to enthuse a wide range of participants
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to manage a group of participants effectively
  • Attend all fixtures/training sessions to include all gym and field sessions solution orientated
  • Must have complete knowledge of current coaching strategies and techniques.

Job Requirements

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to a, personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Must be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp and some repetitive motions.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written standard English.
  • As required by the 1986 Immigration Act, be prepared to present acceptable documentation showing your identity and that you are a U.S. citizen or an alien who is authorized to work.
  • A background investigation will be conducted prior to the offer of employment. A signed authorization for the release of personal information will be required if selected for an interview.
