Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority

Chief Objective of Position: Provide exceptional leadership for the men’s basketball program with a continued focus on the recruitment and development of student-athletes both in the classroom and on the court while also cultivating relationships that support the success of the program on campus and in the community.
Work Tasks:
- Provides leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student-athletes at Christopher Newport University.
- Directs and provides the planning, organizing, and coaching of the Christopher Newport University Men’s Basketball team.
- Encourages, fosters, and directly supports student athletic academic success in the classroom.
- Collects and analyzes tactical and statistical data of opponent teams; Designs game plans and strategies; analyzes performance of the Men’s Basketball team and adjust strategies as needed. Establishes game schedules.
- Counsels team members in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters; consults with University administration and faculty for resolution of problems as required.
- Responsible for working in partnership with University Advancement to cultivate and steward donors for the men’s basketball program and manage alumni engagement opportunities for men’s basketball alumni.
- Responsible for managing personnel decisions as appropriate.
- Oversees all financial aspects of the Men’s Basketball program, including budget development and management.
- Utilizes independent judgment and renders decisions on a daily basis regarding men’s basketball with little or no supervision on matters of importance.
- Develops and implements operational guidelines and procedures per area of expertise.
- Screens and evaluates athletic qualifications of prospective men’s basketball recruits; coordinates with University Undergraduate Admissions Office to establish academic eligibility and arranges meetings between prospects and the University. Coordinates campus tours for visiting prospective players. Assists with new student orientation activities.
- Compiles and analyzes game statistics for Christopher Newport University Men’s Basketball team performance.
- Plans and administers the off season physical training program; provide special training for individual Men’s Basketball members as required.
- Studies, evaluates and implements innovations in Men’s Basketball strategy and equipment. Authorizes purchases of Men’s Basketball related equipment.
- Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the university and the NCAA. Responsible for safety rules and regulations regarding use of equipment to reduce liability and to ensure NCAA compliance.
- Represents the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events. Participates in professional associations.
- Performs public relations and marketing activities to promote the athletic program; performs community relation activities.
- Coordinate coach’s clinic; supervises dress code, any support staff and all team members.
- Works a variety of schedules and hours consistent with the needs of the position.
- Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and/or relations within the office/department and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, guests, and employees. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) related to position: Knowledge and demonstrated experience with National Collegiate Athletics Association and Conference rules and regulations. Skills in training or instructing student athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Demonstrated skills using a personal computer. Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects. Ability to foster positive internal and external public relations.
Required Education: Master’s Degree or Bachelor’s degree with work experience that equates to an advanced degree.
Experience Required:
- Significant and successful demonstrated basketball coaching experience.
- Demonstrated skills with personal computers.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience with National Collegiate Athletics Association and Conference rules and regulations.
- Experience in recruiting, training, and mentoring student-athletes.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in team management including assistant coaches and others
Additional Consideration - Experience:
- Significant and successful demonstrated head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
- Proven experience in recruiting successful student athletes consistent with NCAA guidelines.
- Experience in fostering positive internal and external public relations.
- Experience in recognizing, supporting and referring student athletes for needed academic and personal support.
