Head of Minor Projects and Surveying
The role
The University is seeking a Head of Minor Projects and Surveying to lead and develop a new team responsible for surveying, planning and delivering a programme of minor works across our diverse and complex campus. This role sits at the intersection of building surveying and project delivery, with responsibility for shaping a prioritised, well-planned programme of works across historic and listed buildings alongside modern teaching, research and specialist facilities.
The postholder will lead a team of project managers, providing professional oversight across the minor projects portfolio from early identification and feasibility through to delivery and handover. Projects will range in scale and complexity and may include refurbishment, compliance-driven works, fabric repairs, adaptations to support teaching and research, and targeted improvements to the University’s physical and digital infrastructure.
As well as providing excellent leadership to a team of busy Project Managers, the role will also work closely with internal teams and external consultants and contractors, ensuring works are appropriately prioritised, compliant and deliverable. The role requires a strong background in building surveying or construction, with the ability to manage a team, coordinate multiple disciplines and oversee delivery in a live operational environment.
What will you be doing?
You will lead the planning and delivery of the University’s minor projects programme, combining building surveying expertise with strong team leadership to ensure works are prioritised, compliant and well delivered across a complex estate.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Leading and developing a team of project managers, setting clear standards and ensuring projects are delivered safely and to agreed time, cost and quality parameters.
- Overseeing best-practice project delivery, including quality assurance, audits and compliance with statutory, legislative and University governance requirements.
- Developing and managing the 5-year and 10-year capital maintenance programmes, informed by asset condition, risk and strategic priorities.
- Managing project budgets and contributing to annual capital and maintenance planning.
- Overseeing building condition surveys and asset data, ensuring information is accurate, consistent and used to inform investment and prioritisation decisions.
- Working collaboratively with maintenance, sustainability and other specialist teams to support operational needs and carbon reduction objectives.
- Supporting robust, data-led business cases and promoting effective cross-functional working across the estate.
You should apply if
- You are a chartered professional (MRICS) with strong experience in building surveying and project management, with a track record of planning and delivering minor works programmes and maintenance strategies.
- You have extensive experience in a built environment discipline, with a broad understanding of building assets, lifecycle performance and estate management.
- You have a solid working knowledge of construction legislation and standards, including CDM 2015, planning and building regulations, and are confident applying these in practice.
- You have experience leading and developing teams, managing workloads, making decisions and maintaining morale in a busy delivery environment.
- You are comfortable working with data and digital tools to support planning, prioritisation and reporting.
- You enjoy being hands-on across an estate, including regular site visits and inspections in operational environments.
