About This Opportunity

The University of Queensland is seeking an academic leader to serve as Head, Royal Brisbane Clinical Unit (RBCU) and Head, Learning Community (Central). This dual role leads the delivery of the flagship MD program at the Clinical Unit while building strong partnerships with the Hospital and Health Service Executive to ensure excellence in teaching and student outcomes.

As Head of the Central Learning Community, encompassing both the RBCU and the Greenslopes Clinical Unit, you will foster a strong sense of belonging for students and staff, guiding medical students throughout their four-year journey and strengthen connections across hospitals, community health services, and general practices. This is a unique opportunity to shape medical education, drive staff engagement, and contribute to UQ’s vision for world-class teaching and learning.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Leadership and Engagement: Provide academic leadership of the Royal Brisbane Clinical Unit and Learning Community (Central), fostering strong partnerships with Hospital and Health Service executives, healthcare facilities, and the broader University community to enhance teaching, learning, and student belonging.
• Academic Workforce Development: Recruit, support, and mentor academic staff and UQ Academic Title Holders, ensuring high-quality teaching, research capacity, and alignment with the goals of the Medical School and Faculty.
• Operational and Resource Management: Oversee the Unit’s operational, financial, and infrastructure needs, ensuring responsible use of resources, effective delivery of professional staff services, and representation of the Unit and Medical School in relevant committees and external partnerships.
• Teaching, Learning, and Research Excellence: Lead the delivery and continual improvement of the MD program within the Unit and Learning Community, ensure student support and progression, foster a culture of teaching excellence, and promote clinical and educational research that contributes to the school’s reputation and impact.

In this role, you will be responsible for teaching and supervising medical students within the hospital. Applicants must hold a clinical position at Royal Brisbane Women’s Hospital to be considered for this opportunity.

About You

• Medical qualification with eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner in Australia, including a specialist qualification recognised by AHPRA and the relevant specialist college.
• Postgraduate qualification (PhD or MD by research) in medicine or medical education, or evidence of equivalent scholarly contribution.
• Sustained record of professional leadership and clinical innovation.
• Proven experience as a research leader, including securing external research funding, supervising HDR students, and delivering significant research outcomes.
• Record of outstanding impact and national recognition in clinical teaching and/or clinical research.
• Demonstrated academic leadership with strategic, organisational, and business management capability.
• Expert knowledge and highly developed skills in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with contributions to continuing medical education.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build relationships and represent the University to healthcare executives, academic peers, government, and professional bodies.
