Academic Guidance Lead

Job Description:

About This Opportunity

At UQ, you’ll be part of a values-driven community committed to inclusion, connection and impact. Following the establishment of eight geographically based Learning Communities in 2023—three within the Rural Clinical School—UQ Medical School is redefining how students, academics, clinical teachers and professional staff come together to create an academic home where students are supported to thrive throughout the Doctor of Medicine program.

The Academic Guidance Lead plays a pivotal role in this environment, providing expert support to students across their MD journey and working closely with Regional Clinical Unit academics to continually strengthen the Learning Community. Guided by UQ’s commitment to belonging and excellence, this role focuses on fostering an inclusive, supportive culture that enables students and staff to connect, grow and flourish as developing medical professionals.

Key responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

  • Student-centred teaching and leadership: Provide expert academic guidance and leadership across Years 1–4 of the MD program using a stepped-care approach, delivering tailored support, remediation, pastoral and career guidance, and contributing to high-quality clinical teaching and staff development.
  • Learning community and quality improvement: Work collaboratively with students and colleagues to develop personalised learning plans, support transition to the new MD and Learning Communities, and contribute to quality assurance, governance and continuous improvement across the TRCU and Rural Clinical School.
  • Research and supervision: Maintain personal academic standing through research and scholarship, build regional research capacity through collaborative projects, and lead student engagement in research while developing and managing staff performance in line with University policy.
  • Citizenship, service and rural impact: Actively contribute to the TRCU and wider community, promote rural medical careers, engage constructively with healthcare partners, fulfil mandatory training requirements, and represent UQ through service on committees and community engagement.

This is a teaching focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

About You

  • Relevant medical qualification with current AHPRA registration and extensive clinical experience in a general or specialist capacity.
  • Demonstrated excellence in medical education, including student support, clinical supervision, and high-quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Strong academic profile with peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and contributions to successful external research funding.
  • Proven academic leadership in teaching and learning, including scholarship of learning and teaching and senior contributions to curriculum quality.
  • Established service and leadership record within the University and profession, fostering professional links, specialty engagement, and consultancy development.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, organisational and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and manage complex academic environments.
