Job Summary
The Health Professions Specialist will support students in their planning, preparation, and application to graduate programs in the Health professions, specifically the allied health professions. This position performs a variety of advising, counseling, programming, graduate school relations and administrative functions within the Office of Health Professions.
The Specialist will create group programming, establish and manage liaison relationships with key academic departments, and build relationships with employers, graduate programs, and volunteer opportunities. This Specialist will work primarily with allied health areas including: Physician Assistant, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Vet Medicine, and others as determined. This position will report to the Associate Director of the Office of Health Professions.
Employment Type: Full-time (.92 FTE), Exempt (Salaried), and Benefits Eligible
Salary Range: $50,000-59,000 annually
Main Responsibilities
Student Advising
- Provide comprehensive pre-professional advising to current students and alumni through individual, group, and virtual appointments, focusing on career exploration, job/internship search strategies, and graduate/professional school application processes.
- Help students navigate the prerequisite course requirements for graduate school as well as standardized tests preparation required for application to health profession graduate programs.
- Assist students with gaining exposure to the health professions through shadowing opportunities, volunteer positions and patient care positions.
- Provide dedicated support for both students and alumni applicants in the graduate application process. Provide focused workshops on the centralized application, personal statements and interview strategies. Provide group and one-on-one support and advising through the application process.
- Serve as the primary advisor to pre-health student organizations.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student records, documenting advising sessions, action plans, and resource referrals.
Program Management & Resource Creation
- Develop, coordinate, and execute key student engagement programs, including the First Year Interest Group (FIG) mentoring program, the May Term Internship, and various volunteer opportunities.
- Create and manage a consistent outreach and communication plan, including bi-weekly newsletters and podcasts, pop-up advising sessions, and other promotional events.
- Research, develop, and regularly update all pre-health digital resources, including four-year academic plans, and disseminate this information to faculty and campus partners.
- Engage in continuous professional development to stay current on pre-health profession requirements, including prerequisites, clinical hours, and standardized tests.
- Assist with administrative functions for the department, including tracking annual statistics, program assessment, and participating in relevant campus committees.
Strategic Partnerships & Campus Collaboration
- Build and maintain strong relationships with external partners, including employers, graduate/professional school admissions staff, and healthcare professionals to create shadowing, volunteer, and networking opportunities for students.
- Serve as the primary liaison to related academic departments and faculty, collaborating to identify student needs, update advising resources, and integrate pre-health professional development into the academic experience.
- Partner with key campus offices, such as Admission, Career, Academic Support, and Accessibility Services, to deliver collaborative programming and ensure a cohesive pre-health message for current and prospective students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Prerequisites
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex information clearly and engage diverse audiences.
- Strong computer proficiency, including Google Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Master's degree in areas of study related to counseling, student development, or education.
- 2+ years of experience in higher education.
- Proficiency with computer databases (e.g. Starfish, Handshake, WebAdmit Liaison) and digital tools to facilitate service delivery and community outreach.
- Experience working with undergraduate students in a liberal arts context.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively manage projects.
Working Environment
Position is an on-campus work position, with possibility of one day/week remote work.
