Position Summary

The Health & Safety Professional plays a critical role in promoting a safe, healthy, and inclusive living and working environment within the Office of Housing Administration (OHA). Working collaboratively with Housing leadership and campus partners, this position develops, implements, and evaluates environmental health and safety programs that support the well-being of students, staff, and the broader university community. Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the role applies professional expertise in environmental health and safety regulations, best practices, and risk mitigation to ensure compliance and continuous improvement. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and deliver environmental health and safety programs in support of Housing Administration and university operations.
  • Conduct safety inspections, incident investigations, and risk assessments to promote compliance and a culture of safety.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure adherence to environmental health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Create, review, and assess policies and procedures related to environmental health and safety in collaboration with Housing leadership.
  • Manage multiple priorities independently while providing guidance or lead work direction as needed to support operational goals.

Position Information

  • Full-time, benefits eligible, permanent/probationary position.
  • Position is designated Exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.

Department Summary

The Division of Business and Financial Affairs is responsible for ensuring a safe, productive campus environment while providing the highest quality service in support of academic excellence through thoughtful stewardship of financial, technological, infrastructure, and human resources at San Diego State University.

Environmental Health and Safety is responsible for the development and implementation of programs aimed at protecting the campus community, and for providing compliance with numerous federal, state, and local regulatory statutes. This department reports to the Associate Vice President for Administration in the Division of Business and Financial Affairs. In partnership with OHA and EH&S the Health & Safety Professional facilitates health and safety inspections, service requests inspections, and support with emergency procedures.

The Office of Housing Administration (OHA) is a self-funded operation responsible for planning, providing, and administering housing operations, services, and facilities with over 100 employees and more than 150 student assistants. With an annual operating budget exceeding $159 million, OHA provides housing for over 9,000 students, live-in professional staff, and faculty across 25 residential buildings totaling more than 2 million square feet of residential facilities. OHA also operates SDSU-IV housing at the Imperial Valley campus. OHA manages the operation of residence halls, apartments, and conference and event spaces. In partnership with the Residential Education Office (REO), OHA supports the educational mission of the university while providing the business operations for all housing-related functions, ensuring a high-quality environment that enhances the student educational experience.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and four years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. A professional certification may be required for some positions.

Key Qualifications

  • Working skills and knowledge of environmental health and safety principles, practices, methodologies, and regulations.
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting safety inspections and incident investigations.
  • Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify environmental health and safety risks and develop effective mitigation strategies.
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety laws, regulations, and industry standards.
  • Master's Degree in Public Health or other relevant fields preferred.
  • At least five years of customer service experience.
  • Previous experience leading or supervising professional staff.
  • Proficiency in the following Software programs: Office Suite and Google Suite, with advanced skills in Excel and Google Spreadsheets, Smartsheets, StarRez, Oracle I-Procurement, Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Sign, Concur

Compensation:

 Salary is based on your experience, education, and qualifications, within the department's budget and equity guidelines.

  • Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 1 ($6,668) for highly qualified candidates.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,668 - $9,714 per month (Step 1 - Step 20).
  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
