The Health Sciences Librarian serves as the subject liaison to the Nursing, Physical Therapy, Psychology, and Biological Sciences departments while also providing research assistance, information literacy instruction, and outreach to all members of the university community both in-person and online.
Work Location: Chalon Campus (West Los Angeles).
Start Date: Immediately
Annual Salary Rate Range: $68,640.00
Monthly Salary Rate Range: $5,720.00
Hiring salary can be above the posted pay range if candidate's qualifications are determined to be above the minimum requirements of the position description.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Designs and leads research skills instruction and health information literacy in a variety of formats, including classroom visits, online research guides and tutorials, individual research consultations and workshops to undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty.
- Provides research assistance to undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty in the health, social and physical sciences.
- Supports the development of the Physician's Assistant program at MSMU, serving as its liaison once it is established.
- Supervises and provides leadership for access services at the Charles Willard Coe Memorial Library (Chalon campus).
- Assists the Associate Director of Research and Instruction with departmental learning outcomes assessment, online learning projects, and LMS integrations using Canvas.
- Participates in digital and print collection development.
- Represents the library in university-wide activities and other venues, participate in other related library activities to support the University Libraries' mission, and serve the university community as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with, and support, librarians and staff as both campus libraries to ensure optimal service is given to all members of the MSMU community.
- Work location is in person at the Chalon campus. Weekends and evenings may be required on occasion.
- Runs reports and create summaries for annual reports.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Director and/or AVP of Libraries and Academic Resources
Job Requirements:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of health sciences or related subject areas (e.g., nursing, biology, exercise science).
- Understanding of learning pedagogies and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education.
- Familiarity with health information resources, including PubMed and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH).
- Awareness of best practices in teaching and learning services, instructional technology, assessment, and collection development.
- Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic librarianship and medical librarianship.
Abilities and Skills:
- Ability to create engaging learning experiences for students, faculty, and community audiences.
- Ability to build collaborative relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the broader university community.
- Strong proficiency with instructional and library technologies, including emerging platforms for service delivery.
- Familiarity with learning assessment methods and techniques.
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication, and presentation skills.
Education:
ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and/or Information Science (MLS/MLIS) required, or near completion.
Experience:
Required:
- Familiarity providing reference and/or user services in a library setting.
- Experience leading projects with multiple stakeholders and assessing results.
- Flexibility to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Preferred:
- Experience providing reference services in a health sciences or academic library.
- Experience developing and delivering library instruction, LibGuides, and online tutorials.
- Experience using an integrated library system or library services platform, preferably ExLibris Alma/Primo.
- Experience in a health sciences library as a librarian or equivalent, preferably serving undergraduate and graduate students.
- Familiarity with instruction and information literacy practices, including best practices and emerging trends.
