Social Sciences Librarian

Reporting to the Associate Director, Social Sciences & Clark Library, within the Research Division of the Library, the Social Sciences Librarian participates in the full scope of outreach, engagement, instruction, and consultation activities that team members provide to support research lifecycle service provision on the U-M Ann Arbor campus. As the Social Sciences Librarian you will collaborate with other social sciences liaison librarians and functional specialists, and use a team-centered approach to deliver existing service offerings and to develop new services, collections, and programs to support research, teaching, and learning in the social sciences. You will be the designated liaison to the School of Social Work (SSW), with potential liaison assignments to other social science schools or departments. Additionally, you will collaborate with other team members on Evidence Synthesis Services and assume additional responsibilities and projects as assigned.
- Liaison & Outreach (40%)
- Provide outreach to faculty and students in the School of Social Work and other social sciences programs, including some emphasis on interdisciplinary centers and institutes, such as the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) and the Michigan Institute for Data and AI in Society (MIDAS.)
- Promote access to knowledge by connecting researchers with library services, expertise, and systems, amplifying the impact of their research.
- Work with users to align library resources to their research and teaching interests, thereby increasing library responsiveness to their needs.
- Promote library collections and services, and encourage student and faculty participation in Library events and programs.
- Advocate for improved library services to better support users' research, teaching, and learning needs.
- Research Consultation & Instruction (40%)
- Partner with faculty to develop appropriate course-integrated instructional workshops.
- Provide reference and consultation research services to faculty and students in social work and related fields.
- Cultivate and contribute to evidence synthesis and advanced reviews through consultation, educational programming, and partnering with library colleagues.
- Partner on the design and implementation of a range of evidence synthesis efforts, including systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and more.
- Contribute to the social sciences team's expansion of expertise in qualitative data analysis tools and methods, and other advanced technologies.
- Collection Development & Management (10%)
- Lead acquiring, managing, and assessing collections in all formats in assigned subject areas, including social work, gerontology, and allied fields; as well as related endowments, gifts, and budgets.
- Professional Activities (10%)
- Participate in a range of professional activities contributing to research, teaching, and service. These activities include membership in professional and scholarly organizations, attendance at conferences, creative projects and service.
Required Qualifications
- At least 3 years experience as a social sciences or health sciences librarian.
- Advanced degree in Library and Information Science or equivalent discipline.
- Knowledge of research trends, pedagogy, interventions and programs of the field of social work.
- Demonstrated experience leading search strategy development, and documentation related to Evidence Synthesis services.
The anticipated hire date is in January 2026. Appointment is anticipated as an Associate Librarian, Sr. Associate Librarian or Librarian. Salary and rank are dependent on the candidate's qualifications and experience. The target salary range for this position is $66,000 to $76,000 for the Associate Librarian rank, $76,000 - $89,600 for the Sr. Associate Librarian rank and $89,600 - $123,600 for the Librarian rank.
