The School of Medicine's Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy & Clinical Immunology has an opening for a full-time University Staff (unclassified) Healthcare Clinical Operations Professional (Open Rank: Entry-Senior), HLA Serology Technologist (Evening Shift) position.
Nature of Work:
This position performs clinical laboratory testing to determine ABO and MHC compatibility of transplant recipients and donors which includes HLA antibody screening and crossmatching. This position adheres to the standards of external regulatory bodies including ABHI, CAP, and CLIA, and understands the principles of histocompatibility and immunogenetics. This role prepares reagents while adhering to strict quality control guidelines and performs and documents instrument function checks and preventive maintenance. The successful professional will work independently and with others, readily adapt to changes in the work environment, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, communicate effectively with others, participate in on-call activities and continuing education, and demonstrate initiative in accomplishing the goals of the laboratory.
Examples of Duties Performed:
All levels, with increased independence at higher levels:
- Accessions samples into database, verifies acceptability of specimens for testing, and ensures appropriate requisition accompanies each sample for testing.
- Understands the principles and procedures of clinical histocompatibility testing. Learns test protocols for ABO red cell typing.
- Learns and performs HLA panel reactive antibody (PRA) procedure and protocol for screening of patient sera; demonstrates a working knowledge of different screening methods and understands variations in sensitivity of those techniques.
- Performs class I and II crossmatches on recipient/donor pairs according to written protocol.
- Actively participates in quality assurance program.
- Records results accurately and concisely communicates them as needed to transplant personnel.
- Work ethic: performs assays according to established protocols, follows safety guidelines, uses universal precautions, and works well with others and independently.
Minimum Qualifications:
Entry Level:
- A bachelor's degree in science or health related field
Intermediate Level:
- A bachelor's degree in science or health related field
- One (1) year of professional level experience in an accredited HLA laboratory
Senior Level:
- A bachelor's degree in science or health related field
- Two (2) years of professional level experience in an accredited HLA laboratory
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with electronic data capture systems (e.g., EMR or HER and data management systems)
- Certification by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) as a Certified Histocompatibility Technologist (CHT) or ABHI Certified Histocompatibility Specialist (CHS) or certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, MT(ASCP)

Salary and Benefits:
Entry Level: $51,378 to $65,353
Intermediate Level: $55,911 to $71,119
Senior Level: $60,445 to $76,886
