The HVAC and Power Plant Technician will operate, maintain, install, and repair heating, steam, ventilation and air conditioning systems so that temperatures are maintained in all buildings campus wide relating to each of the systems listed above. Work with other trades within facilities, contractors and vendors on campus projects involving HVAC, plumbing, Energy Management systems and boiler relief operations.
This position is represented by Operating Engineers Local 49.
Responsibilities
- Support mechanical systems relating to heating, cooling, and ventilation of buildings in proper operating setpoints to ensure maximum comfort and efficiency of operation for facility users. (35%)
- Perform preventive maintenance on equipment such as supply fans, exhaust fans, traps, air conditioners, fan coil units, air compressors, etc., to maintain optimal operation and minimize unscheduled downtime. (30%)
- Operate shifts in the Boiler Plant, monitoring high pressure gas/oil boilers and all boiler related equipment to include the testing of boiler water. (10%)
- Assist other trades with troubleshooting and repairing of mechanical systems and report findings to the Power Plant Director to minimize or eliminate downtime. (10%)
- Support the Power Plant Director in managing the building control system while ensuring the environment and energy efficiency is maintained. Monitor BAS equipment daily to detect potential issues and prevent failures. (5%)
- Collaborate with contractors and vendors on campus projects involving HVAC, energy management systems and boiler operations. (5%)
- Respond promptly to emergency situations to ensure that both property damage and human discomfort are minimized. Take immediate corrective action deemed necessary to prevent further damage or discomfort. (5%)
Minimum Qualifications
- 1st Class B State Boiler License
- Five or more years of experience in installing, repairing and maintaining heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems according to specifications and building codes.
- Experience in performing routine preventative maintenance to ensure systems operate efficiently and to extend their lifespan.
- Ability to operate boilers and other machinery associated with boiler operations.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and teamwork skills are essential for working in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical diagrams to ensure accurate installation and maintenance of systems.
- Ability to diagnose and resolve issues in HVAC systems efficiently, using critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in the maintenance of boilers, HVAC, plumbing and related fields.
- Experience with Siemen's control systems and/or other controls systems.
- EPA Certification/Refrigeration experience
Physical Requirements
- Requires working at a computer, including typing, reading from a screen, and using various software programs essential for the role.
- Occasionally required to lift or move items up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to perform physical tasks for extended periods, including lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, and reaching, squatting, standing, etc. as required.
- Ability to work with and or around hazardous chemicals in a safe manner.
- Ability to tolerate working in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Ability to perform the physical duties of the position, including working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain, walking long distances, and lifting or moving equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
Travel Requirements
Occasional travel between the campuses of the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.
The posted wage represents CSB and SJU's good faith estimate of likely compensation at the time of posting. Actual pay will be dependent upon several factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and skills, and may fall outside of the range indicated.
