Industry Research Fellow, Experimental Propulsion
- Drive experimental research in next-generation propulsion, focusing on rotating detonation engines and high-enthalpy systems for future high-speed flight

- Based at the Bundoora East campus. Appointment at Academic Level B + 17% Super, fixed term until April 2027 with possibility of extension.
About the Role
The Research Fellow will contribute to high-impact research within the School and Research Institutes, undertaking both independent and collaborative projects aligned with the University's strategic research priorities. A key part of the role is building strong research networks across RMIT and with national partners, ensuring the Fellow's work is recognised for its contribution to disciplinary advancement. The position offers the opportunity to drive high-quality research outcomes, secure competitive funding, and embed expertise within a supportive and research-active environment.

The role has a strong experimental focus, contributing to next-generation rocket and air-breathing propulsion systems under the Joint Chair for Supersonic Propulsion & Flight Technologies. The Fellow will lead experimental campaigns; designing, executing and analysing ground and flight tests, particularly in rotating detonation engines and high-enthalpy propulsion concepts. Working within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team of researchers, engineers and technical specialists, the successful candidate will help deliver outcomes that shape the future of high-speed flight.
This includes:
- Advancing research in RDE and high-enthalpy propulsion technologies
- Designing and executing experimental programs across ground and flight environments
- Collaborating in a fast-paced team to support multiple cutting-edge propulsion research streams
About You
- Demonstrated experience in designing, conducting, and analysing high-enthalpy or reacting-flow experiments such as propulsion or combustion systems.
- Evidence of hands-on experimental capability, including facility operation, instrumentation, and troubleshooting under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions.
- Proficiency with data analysis tools and scientific programming languages (e.g., Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW).
- Commitment to safe laboratory practices and familiarity with experimental risk management processes.
- A practical, outcome-oriented mindset with a strong drive to translate experimental research into tangible impact.
- Emerging track record and recognition for quality research outputs which will contribute to existing Discipline and School research areas, evidenced by publications, development of new research initiatives, competitive research funding, and industry links.
- Ability to build effective networks with colleagues and generate alternative funding projects through effective liaison with industry and government.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills appropriate for interacting with higher degree by research candidates, staff and industry, together with a strong commitment to teamwork and multidisciplinary collaboration.
Qualifications
Mandatory: PhD or equivalent in a relevant field
Please Note: Appointment to this position is subject to passing a Working with Children and National Police Check. The holder of this role must be an Australian citizen and be able to obtain and maintain a Personnel Security Clearance at Negative Vetting Level 1.
