Offer Description
The Institute of Physics is announcing a vacancy for a postdoc position (female/male, 1 executor) for a fixed period of one year, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of two years, in scientific research related to the PlasmaMeetsArt project. The position will be supervised by Nikša Krstulović, PhD (niksak@ifs.hr).
The project aims to develop a device for the sterilization and conservation of paper‑ and canvas‑based artworks using a cold atmospheric plasma jet. The project would also investigate the incorporation of nanoparticles into paper using plasma, providing long‑term protection against the formation of microorganisms.
A mandatory requirement is a completed doctorate in the field of natural sciences, physics or chemistry.
Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated excellence in research (awards, prizes, scholarships, published papers, conference presentations, etc.) and who have prior research experience in experimental physics or chemistry related to laser synthesis of nanoparticles in liquids and their applications. An additional advantage is experience in using plasma jets for material treatment or for the production of plasma‑activated water. Familiarity with operating UV‑Vis, DLS, Z‑potential, ICP‑OES, photoluminescence, FT‑IR, goniometer, and optical microscopy instruments is also considered an asset.
The project involves the use of an Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jet for the treatment of surfaces of various paper‑ and canvas‑based materials for the purpose of sterilization, removal, and deactivation of microorganisms. It would partially replace standard hazardous disinfection techniques for artefacts. The plasma jet would also be used for the subsequent incorporation of nanoparticles into the surface of paper or canvas. The project would not treat actual artworks but faithful replicas or relevant reference materials. The nanoparticles would be synthesized via laser ablation in liquids.
The candidate is expected to have an excellent understanding of plasma physics and chemistry and their applications, a high level of motivation for laboratory work on the described topic, and excellent proficiency in English.
