Kellogg Community College is seeking a collaborative, student-centered Instructional Assistant - English to join our dynamic Center for Student Success team. This role plays a critical part in supporting the College's mission by delivering subject-specific tutoring that fosters content mastery and encourages independent learning among our students. The successful candidate will provide high-quality academic support in English and related subject areas through one-on-one and group tutoring sessions. They will work with a team of professional and peer tutors committed to promoting academic achievement and student persistence. The Center for Student Success is a department within the Student Affairs Division and provides comprehensive support services including tutoring, placement and academic testing, disability services, Perkins grant support for eligible students, and coordination of Kellogg Kickstart, an initiative designed to help new students transition successfully into college.
Kellogg Community College is located in Battle Creek, Michigan, a community of approximately 54,000 people. Leisure activities, natural resources and learning opportunities provide a foundation for residents. Located along the I-94 interstate, Battle Creek is within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, 60 minutes of Lansing and Grand Rapids and within three hours of Detroit, Chicago and Indianapolis.

Physical Demands
The job responsibilities are performed in an office area and presentation venues. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as independent mobility between work areas, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, Writing, or Language Arts from an accredited college/university (at the time of application, attach unofficial transcripts showing completed coursework and degree conferred)
- Minimum of one (1) year of related experience, such as teaching and/or tutoring
- Ability to work with current Microsoft Office software applications at an intermediate level, including but not limited to, Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Ability to successfully work with culturally and academically diverse students
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
Preferred but not Required
- Experience in teaching and/or tutoring English; knowledge of best practices in tutoring
- Demonstrated ability to function as a member of a team
- Demonstrated knowledge of instructional technology
- Experience working in higher education
- Demonstrated commitment to the community college philosophy
Proposed Salary
According to the published support staff salary schedule, Classification Pay Grade 13, 2025-2026 starting hourly wage range, step one $22.28 to step five $26.82.
Job Duties
Essential Function: Tutoring
- Assess and determine appropriate instructional approach to meet student educational needs through active listening and review of current student work.
- Assist students with required class assignments, exam preparation and review, and learning strategies.
- Offer direction to students to enhance subject matter mastery and successful completion of curriculum requirements.
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain subject matter content-knowledge in order to adapt and support a variety of student needs.
- Work directly with faculty in order to determine appropriate services to meet student learning outcomes.
Essential Function: Coordination of Services
- Develop a framework for delivery of subject specific instructional support, in accordance with current student learning outcomes, to increase student success.
- Train subject-specific instructional support staff on service delivery model of tutoring working directly with other subject-specific tutors.
- Monitor, request to order learning materials and educational aids (e.g., books, lab supplies, etc.)
- Coordinate subject-specific tutoring schedule to include face-to-face and virtual services amongst all subject-specific instructional personnel in order to maximize student services.
- Work with faculty to maintain knowledge of course level student learning outcomes in order to deliver relevant tutoring to improve student success.
Essential Function: Department Support
- Provide department coverage as needed including answering telephone, greeting visitors, testing services, and inquiries from internal and external as needed.
- Represent the college and department in outreach efforts and collaborative projects to increase the impact of the department on student success.
- Provide support and scheduling assistance for students and department staff.
