Job Description:

The Instructional Designer at SUNY Oneonta will join our team in the Faculty Center to support excellence in instructional technology and course design. This position supports research-driven learning design principles, advances campus efforts to increase inclusivity and equity by ensuring optimal course and program accessibility, and promotes the principles of universal design for learning.

The successful candidate will offer expertise in online learning design and implementation and will conduct reviews of course content and organization with attention to accessibility and quality. The role also contributes to program-level assessments, including periodic evaluations of online courses and programs required by Middle States and NC-SARA. In this regard, the Instructional Designer provides essential support for SUNY Oneonta's online graduate programs as the University scales existing programs and develops new offerings to serve learners in and beyond New York State.

The Faculty Center is a campus hub dedicated to supporting faculty excellence, instructional innovation, and inclusive teaching practices. The Center collaborates with faculty and academic units across the University to promote effective teaching, meaningful integration of instructional technologies, and continued professional growth.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Collaborating with colleagues in the Faculty Center, Accessibility Resources, the Milne Library, and academic departments across the University to provide input and direction on online learning, accessibility, copyright, and related topics to the instructional design team, faculty/staff, and others during the course design and teaching processes.
  • Collaborating with faculty in planning, designing, developing, and managing distance-education course instruction using the University's Distance Education Policy and the Open SUNY Course Quality (OSCQR) rubric.
  • Providing training, professional development, programming, and technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students in areas such as accessibility, assessment, copyright, open educational resources, and effective online-learning practices.
  • Creating reference materials, such as help documents, how-to guides, videos, and online resources, that prepare faculty, staff, and students to use the University's Digital Learning Environment (Brightspace) and related technologies.
  • Supporting the Digital Learning Environment (Brightspace) and integrated third-party tools by assisting with course setup, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring high-quality online course delivery.
  • Participating in distance-education course and program reviews, including periodic evaluations of online courses and programs required by Middle States and NC-SARA.
  • Researching and improving distance-learning delivery methods by staying current with educational technologies, participating in professional development, and engaging in continuous growth in the field.
  • Recommending and promoting appropriate uses of technology to support high-quality online teaching and learning.
  • Communicating pertinent information regarding online course reviews, Brightspace and related technologies, technical concerns, and general issues to the Director of the Faculty Center for Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship.
  • Serving on committees as needed.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.

Salary: $57,151 - $61,000 commensurate with experience. SUNY Oneonta is a Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) qualifying employer. Information on SUNY's comprehensive benefits offerings can be found at https://www.suny.edu/benefits. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in instructional design, distance learning, educational technology, or related field.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, ideally in team-based environments.
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills.

Additional:

  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies and systems quickly and to provide consultations or create training aids as needed.
  • Demonstrated multicultural competence and/or the ability to work effectively with diverse groups, including students, University personnel, and external entities.

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in instructional design, distance learning, educational technology or related field.
  • Experience with Quality Matters, the Open SUNY Course Quality Rubric (OSCQR), or comparable course review processes.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of teaching or instructional support experience.
  • Experience providing training to faculty within a higher-education environment.
  • Experience with Desire2Learn's Brightspace Learning Management System or an equivalent learning management system (or digital learning environment).
