Instructional Laboratory Technician (Fire Academy)(47.5%)

Reporting to and under the supervision of the Dean, Health Professions and Public Safety, with daily work direction provided by the Department Chair, performs a variety of technical and specialized duties related to the preparation, operation, maintenance, and safety compliance of Fire Technology instructional laboratories, training facilities, drill grounds, apparatus bays, equipment storage areas, and related instructional spaces. Provides technical assistance to faculty and students in support of Fire Technology curriculum. Performs clerical and inventory-related duties to support assigned programs and performs other related duties as assigned.

The normal workweek for this position is 19 hours per week.

Example of Duties

Essential Duties:
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.

  1. Assists in the operation and maintenance of Fire Technology instructional facilities, including drill grounds, equipment rooms, and designated training areas.
  2. Prepares, stages, inspects, and secures firefighting equipment and training materials for instructional demonstrations and practical skills exercises.
  3. Inspects, cleans, maintains, and stores firefighting tools and equipment including hoses, nozzles, ladders, SCBA units, turnout gear, rescue tools, ventilation equipment, and related apparatus.
  4. Assists faculty in setting up and breaking down instructional activities related to fire protection systems, hydraulics, hazardous materials, wildland fire behavior, fire investigation, tactics, and safety and survival.
  5. Maintains laboratory and training environments in a safe, clean, and orderly condition; ensures compliance with established safety standards and operational procedures.
  6. Performs routine inspections and minor maintenance of training equipment; coordinates major repairs through appropriate District procedures.
  7. Orders, receives, inventories, and maintains supplies, consumables, and instructional equipment; conducts vendor research and processes purchase requisitions.
  8. Maintains accurate records related to inventory, equipment inspections, maintenance logs, safety documentation, and program support activities.
  9. Assists students in the proper use and care of training equipment under faculty supervision and reinforces established safety practices.
  10. Provides work direction to college assistants and short-term hourly staff as assigned.
  11. Performs clerical duties including data entry, report preparation, responding to inquiries, maintaining files and records, and supporting departmental documentation.
  12. Assists with coordination of Fire Technology program activities, certification testing, and special training events as directed.
  13. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:
Two (2) years of full-time equivalent responsible experience in fire service, emergency response, public safety training, or related technical instructional support environment.

Education:
Education equivalent to an Associate’s degree (60 semester units) from an accredited institution in Fire Technology, Fire Science, Public Safety, or a related field. Two (2) full-time equivalent years of direct experience in addition to that identified above may be substituted for each one year (30 semester units) of college.

License:
Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class C driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s vehicle insurance policy.

Physical Characteristics:
Position requires sitting and viewing a computer monitor for extended periods of time, plus frequent periods of standing and walking, which may include climbing ladders and staircases; lifting and stacking objects up to 50 pounds occasionally; frequently exerting 10 - 20 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move/handle material and objects; stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting and turning, bending at the waist; hand and finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and related equipment; hearing and speaking to communicate and provide information to others; vision to read printed materials, computer monitor, depth perception, and use of near and far vision; exposure to toxic, pathogenic, or otherwise irritating substances and chemicals and requires the use of personal protective equipment; and travel from site-to-site.

** This is an in-person staff position, working 19 hours per week at our Del Valle(Fire Academy) location, as well as having some travel to the Valencia campus.**
