Position Title

Instructional Specialist 2 - Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology

Job Summary

Assist and support the Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology instructors including preparing labs for demonstrations. Also overseeing the Heavy Equipment/Diesel Shop.

Required Qualifications

Certificates and Licenses

  • Requires valid Oregon driver’s license.
  • Must attain industrial lift truck certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Welding certification and Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Education and Experience

  • Position requires an AA/AS degree in Heavy Equipment/Diesel Technology or equivalent technical discipline, plus a minimum of two years of full-time related experience resulting in a recognized industry certification.
  • Additional related education and experience may substitute for certifications.
  • A minimum of one year of experience working with training employees in the Diesel Heavy equipment repair industry or in an institutional setting involving mentoring activities and/or set-up/support of learning experiences is desirable.
  • Demonstrated competency in machine tool technology, welding, diesel engine repair, power train, fluid and pneumatic systems, or related technical disciplines are preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must have a working knowledge of instructional techniques and skills sufficient to instruct students on a formal and informal level.
  • Considerable technical knowledge in the specific laboratory area of Heavy Equipment technology is necessary.
  • Requires working knowledge of safety practices, and proper operation and techniques for use of equipment in the industry.
  • Strong communication skills required in order to interact with and assist students, staff and the public.

Abilities

  • Ability to set up and maintain laboratory and equipment in a safe, clean and functional manner is required.
  • Requires the ability to independently set up student projects which meet the instructional goals of faculty.
  • Ability to function independently.
  • Must be able to instruct students in the use of Heavy Equipment technology, equipment, supplies, and personal protective equipment.
  • Must be able to communicate in both formal and informal settings with students, instructors, and the general public.
  • Must be able to work respectfully with individuals of all cultures, backgrounds, perspectives, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Welding certification and Commercial Driver’s License is preferred.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical Skills and Abilities: Physical ability to operate demanding equipment. Sufficient hand, arm, and finger dexterity to operate equipment. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking skills to communicate with staff and students. Requires visual acuity to read words and numbers and operate lab equipment.

Working Conditions: Work is performed in college heavy equipment labs and classrooms with potential exposure to weather, safety, or health hazards.

Essential Duties

  1. Assist or tutor students in completing assigned class activities...
  2. Represent the Diesel Department and LBCC to the public...
  3. Maintain the Diesel Department in a clean and safe condition...
  4. Placing orders, obtaining bids and/or purchasing necessary items...
  5. Prepare the lab so assignments may be demonstrated...
  6. May oversee work of one or more student employees.
  7. Procurement, inventory, and disposal of hazardous waste...
  8. Establish, implement, and supervise safety procedures...
  9. In absence of instructors due to illness or meetings, teach/oversee diesel labs and classes.
  10. Represent the department to the public for repair projects...
  11. With department chair approval, accept vehicle donations...
  12. Participate in the salvage and/or sale of department vehicles.
  13. Perform annual inventory of assets...
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Salary Information

The Instructional Specialist 2 position is a Grade 18. For the 2025-26 Academic Year: Grade 18, Step 1 on the Classified salary schedule is $42,001 for a 190-day Academic Year appointment, prorated at 0.769 FTE.
