Provide hands-on support to students requiring improved academic support or specialized study and learning skills; lead and participate in the daily operations of an assigned multi-functioning tutor center; work cooperatively with students and faculty to ensure tutorial objectives are met.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the advanced class in the Instructional Support Assistant series. Positions in this classification provide specialized academic support, study, or learning skills for students and handle the most complex and difficult work within the series. This class is responsible for the overall operation of a multi-functioning tutor center and serves as a lead for lower level instructional staff, tutors and student employees.

The Instructional Support Assistant Series builds upon itself in that higher classifications are expected to perform the duties of the lower classifications in the series in addition to the examples of specified duties and responsibilities listed below.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from an assigned supervisor.

Serves as a functional and technical lead over lower level instruction staff, tutors, and student employees.

Responsibilities and Duties

  1. Provide hand-on academic support to students requiring specialized academic support, study, or learning skills.
  2. Oversee the administrative operations of a multi-functional tutor center including but not limited to scheduling tutors and staff and ensuring satisfactory materials and equipment are available; controls the environment to ensure a productive learning environment.
  3. With the guidance from management, develop and implement tutor center rules and procedures.
  4. Assist instructors to diagnose students learning skills; score and evaluate specialized diagnostic and assessment tests.
  5. Participate in planning for new student and assistance programs; create program materials, procedures and guidelines.
  6. Recruit, train, and schedule the work of student tutors; serves as a lead to lower level instructional support staff;
  7. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Operations, procedures, goals, and services of a college tutor center.
  • Methods and techniques used to assess student tutor needs.
  • Methods, practices, and principles of instruction and tutoring.
  • Assigned academic course at an appropriate level for tutoring.
  • Standard office machines, methods, and procedures; classroom and laboratory procedures and equipment.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping.
  • Proper language usage, spelling grammar, and punctuation.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • Effective study skills and test-taking techniques.

Ability to:

  • Maintain a variety of files and records.
  • Identify studying and test-taking deficiencies and recommend solutions.
  • Research, develop, and deliver workshops and orientations.
  • Create and utilize record keeping data for tracking statistical information.
  • Listen effectively and appropriately assess student academic needs.
  • Serve as a liaison between students and instructors.
  • Respond inquiries from students and faculty.
  • Proctor examinations according to instructions.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds, and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time; use a computer keyboard.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 18 semester units in appropriate academic subject with at least two (2) years providing tutorial assistance.

OR

Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 18 semester units in the appropriate academic subject with at least four (4) years providing tutorial assistance.
